Darkening engraving

I was watching a program the other day on building shotguns, as I remember it was on Holland and Holland guns. They mentioned that ink was used to darken the background on the receivers prior to polishing so the relief would stand out. Does anyone know what is used. I would assume blueing would work but they mentioned "ink". But.......being tv that could mean anything, as we know many of the tv shows can be somewhat misleading.

I knew a very talented engraver, who once worked with Colt, and had him do some high end engraving on a British double rifle for me. He too darkened the engraving background, using what he called ink. I took it to mean India ink, or some sort of permanent ink. It worked well, and is still on that rifle. Engravers would know for sure. Visit some of the engravers forums, and pose this question there; I am sure you will get appropriate answer.
