12ga slug loads
      #205593 - 20/03/12 03:27 PM

I've had a devil of a time finding previously discussed slug loads used in 12ga hulls. Could someone help me out? One of the loadings talked about round balls placed on the over-powder part of a 12ga wad with the shot cup portions cut off.

I have allways had a facination for ball and slug loads for 12 gauge. I recently bought a H&R single barrel rifle 12 gauge for next to nothing. I have tried factory slugs through it without obtaining the accuracy I would like. I then used some cast balls on top of a plastic wad with the petals cut off. With a large dose of Blue Dot powder I got 5" groups at 50 yards. I was hoping for better. I then loaded a 720 grain Fosbury style slug (From a mould made by Cast Bullet Engineering, Sydney Australia). I used fired winchester plastic cases, I cut the crimp off, loaded some Blue Dot with a plastic wad on top with the petals cut off and then seated the slug on top of the wad. (The slug was lubed with Alox) I then used a rolled crimp to put it all together. The little H&R weighs just on six pound, so touching this load off at 1050fps was interesting as you really need to hold the forend very very firmly. 2 1/2" groups at 50 yards. I would not use this load or slug in a smooth bore shotgun. I just wonder how you would go using a slighly smaller ball with a patch on it. Being patched to the righ size would make a good seal and there would be no leading of the bore. You did not say if you were using a smooth bore or rifled.

450,
Did you get the Tracker or the Ultra Slug Hunter? Actually at 6lb I'm guessing the Tracker?
Cheers...

Con. It is the tracker. I would love to have bought a slug hunter and I would have put a set of iron sights on it. It would be a bit heavy and more pleasant to shoot. The tracker is not uncomfortable, you just really have to hang onto the forend or it will jump out of your hand.

Isn't the Slug Hunter the one Ed re-chambered to shoot his altered .5 Browning to a rimmed 3 1/2" brass case? Seems they got some impressive ballistics out of that gun, like 2,400 to 3,000fps with 600gr. and even heavier bullets - or maybe I have that mixed up with the bolt gun.

That would be something to hang onto.

Daryl, that is one gun I do not think I would like to fire, at least not more than onec. HaHa.

Daryl,
Quite possibly, the USH is built on the higher pressure SB2 frames which are also used for the high pressure centrefires.

Yes - they alluded to the poremis it might be, seems to me, some time ago.

Sorry Guys. Have been to the Tulsa Gun Show and then hog hunting in Oklahoma...no luck on hogs.
The shotgun is a Stoeger Upland Supreme 12ga SxS. This is a single trigger gun. I've had a dovetail cut into the non-ventilated rib and put on a Williams sight. Surprisingly, the front bead, although a little large (1/8"), acts as an acceptable front sight for now. Only full and modified chokes came with the gun so bought a couple of skeet chokes for use with slugs.

Have shot a number of loads at 50 yds with this gun. Best so far were Rio Royal 2-3/4", one and one-and-one-eighth ounce slugs. Consistent 2 to 2-1/2" groups at 50 yds. Also, round balls loaded on top of Win wads with the petals cut off and star crimped shoot very well.

Shotgun has an atrocious trigger. One barrel is eight lbs, the other is 10 lbs, both with a number of "catches" while squeezing the trigger. I dropped it off at a shotgun gunsmith Saturday for work to be done on it.
