Puukko for hunter

I built this puukko for a guy who mainly hunts deer and elk. Blade (made by Tero Kotavuopio) is 105 mm long and 26 mm wide, made from low crome carbon steel. Wood is alder root, decoration stripes white bone and ferrule buffalo horn. Sheath is 2 mm thick wegetable tanned cowhide.

When I see this design of knife I always wonder how many slip forward onto the blade. How control when hands wet with blood etc for game use in the field. Nice knife but my concern remains.

This type of handle is very normal in finland and whole skandinavian. And has been it more that 500 years. The trick ot the handle is the tapering pommel end. So when you take puukko in yours hand and enclose your fingers round it, two last fingers will lock yours hand against sliding because their grip is quite stabil. The handle has finished with oil, not warnish so it isn´t so slippery.

The Finns coated their Arctic Birch handled Puukkos with a combination 1/3 Pine Tar,1/3 beeswax and 1/3 Turpentine. This "Finn mix" not only protects the wood but acts a a non sticky "resin like" finish for non slip grip in cold wet weather.I also coat my gun stocks with it as I make my own.

That´s one good altenative for finishing. I use to impregnate my own puukko handles and rifle stocks with Rustins´Danish Oil.

Nice looking knife - I assume elk means moose in Finland. I personally prefer 5 1/2" to 6" (13.97cm to 15.24cm) of blade for moose. Makes the job less than 25 minutes for an old man like me.

The advantage of these group hunts is there probably is eight or more people all wielding knives skinning etc.

You do very fine work Igor. I would not have thought of alder root for handle material. We have a lot of red alder (Alnus rubra) here in Oregon, but of course no arctic birch!

Great knife design, Keen to ad this one to the collection.
I have been using a Norwegian version for some time now (including yesterday) and just love it. The only thing I dislike about the one I have is that the Sheath is now quit loose and allows the knife to fall out easily but this Finnish made one seems to have better quality leather and fits in deeper.
At first the handle shape also worried me about cutting fingers if slippery but this is not a consern as they provide very good grip.

I made this hunting knife to my friends wife. Blade is damascus of two different carbon steel and made by Tero Kotavuopio.

No, you just have to find a good piece of wood.

The owners (she) hands are quite small sized and she mostly shoot deers so 75 mm (3") is enought for skinning them.

By the way, I just forgot to mention that this last knifes handle is made from stacked birc bark. It´s very usefull material; feels always warm, never slippery and do not absorb any dirt if correctly finished.

Every one of my working Knives is a Puukko.The steel in these knives are the best I have ever seen for holding an edge .I have with my Puukkos totally cut up 4 deer without sharpening .I have never seen another knife do this.I have a couple Karesuando Puukkos from Sweden and a few older Marttiini Finland knives thatare incredible.All have the classic Arctic Birch handles that I treat with Pine tar mix for preservation and grip with bloody hands in wet weather
