Harris Holland 360 BPE
      #205333 - 17/03/12 06:47 PM

Good things are said to come in small packages and this is one of them. Built in 1875, it somehow dodged all the want-a-be gunsmiths and got to 2012 untouched. Barrels are Henry rifled and 27" long and bores are next to perfect.
It is perfectly regulated and this was accomplished without the use of a wedge at the muzzles. The chaps that built these little doubles were really, really, good.
You get a bit of an idea of how small this rifle is when you look at the two 360-2 1/4" round and the 450-3 1/4" together.
It has London proof marks and has nothing to relate to its cal./ gauge. A chamber cast showed it is a 360- 2 1/4" with a groove dia. of approx. .366".

enjoy,
Ron.

I wondered if that little gun would turn up again.

Did you buy it recently ?

It's a very nice gun indeed.

This thing is so elegant.

The photos do no justice at all.

Neat rifle!

What's the bullet weight and velocity of the regulation load?

That is an understatement.

It is one of the nicest rifles of this type I have handled.
Everything is just "RIGHT" about it.

Great pick up.

I did acquire this little wonder only recently although it has been in my safe a number of times over the years. The bloke I got it from is a very good friend and every now and again he will just ask me if there is any rifle in his collection that I'd like. BIG problem for me because he only has great stuff that you rarely ever see!
The load used in it is RWS 9.3x72R brass cut to 2 1/4", CCI Lge rifle primer, 21 gr. AR 2207 powder with foam wad and a 190 gr. grooved lead bullet. These scream out at 1600 fps. This is the same load I use in my A. Henry 360 double and the little buggers kill extremely well.

Sweet.

Does this smokeless load print targets above the front sight, or does it hit at point of aim?
Has that front sight been modified?

That is one lovely little rifle. Do you know what it weighs?

The loads used at present do hit right on the point of aim at 50m. I think this load using the 190 gr pill probably isn't the load it was originally sighted in for. My feeling is the 150 gr bullet was the load first used, going on when the rifle was made. The front sight does look as though it has seen a bit of the file, I feel lowered, and thats what makes me think it started life using the lighter load. Also the mould used at present with the rifle is a modern CBE product, which throws the 190 gr bullet. There is also another mould with the rifle which doesn't fit in the case, but is made of bronze and is marked H.Holland 360. This makes a grooved , 155 gr bullet.
Because of the Henry rifling, I'm going to give paper patch bullets a go. Got the mould almost finished yesterday. In my Henry 360, bullet weigth and velocity don't seem to make much difference to regulation. The shots just hit higher as things get lighter and faster.
As to weight of the rifle, it tips the scale right on 3 kg.

Ron,

A nice acquisition for sure. BTW do I know the previous custodian?

Hopefully I'll have another project for you to tickle up this year.

Will give you a bell, OK?
