Hi zex007 - wellcome to NE.

Couple of questions...

1. Bit confusing on calibers - assuming you have an O/U rifle with 2 barrel sets:

- "bergstutz" in 7x65R/.22 Hornet combo set
- double rifle 8x57IRS/8x57IRS set?

2. Are you sure that rifle iwas made by fanzoj - it looks to me that rifle was made by Ludwig Borovnik?

I am copy pasting the descriptons from a file, so it is inaccurate.
These are two different rifles.
1. Fanzoj O/U 7x65R,.22Hornet
2. Borovnik O/U 2 barrel set:
a) 7x65R,.22Hornet
b) 8x57IRS,8x57IRS

Both blitz system, both weight 3.3kg

Question- can someone explain the European desire for the downloaded version of the .22 Hornet tht is prevelent there - ie: 2,400fps with 45gr. bullet. What is the game the ctg. is used for? Black grouse?

400 pound hogs with a Hornet? That's legal? Is it ethical? That is akin to hunting black bear using a Hornet that is downloaded a good 200fps. I'm rather surprised - shocked, even.

zex - thanks for a clarification.

Daryl - I dont't know about Croatia, but here in Slovenia minimum requirements for roe deer is 5,6mm cal. with 3,2g bullet and 1.000J at 100m...therefore .222 Rem. Hornet is only legal for small game like fox, badger and smaller.

Dear Daryl!

I completely understand your concern. I am also often surprised, shocked even by a lot of things. Lately I was surprised, shocked even by Robert Mugabe, Toyota manual gearbox, Apple Q3 earnings, voltage oscillations in my Sansui stereo , Amateur category on Pornhub, and the new Bruce Springsteen album.

I personally like being surprised, it is always a new experience, and I like new experiences. I also like dark chocolate, single malt, public drunkenness, and Porsche cars. I bet you like some of these things too. See, these things we call bonds. They may be weird or awkward, but they are real, so don't try to fight it.

Let me tell you, being surprised is a natural reaction. It is the same feeling you get when that weird uncle we all have hugs you from behind, or as a serial philanderer you come to realize you are divorcing in a No-fault state.

So, what we learned here is there are good and bad surprises. Also there are good and bad Origami pots, but that is another subject.

Basically, what I was telling you is that it was a headshot. I didn't do it, and would never try something like that. I use Hornet for Varmmint on short ranges. I said it can and was done by a professional who ran out of bullets and had to shoot a wounded animal. European game is much smaller, and less dangerous than other Continents, so the calibers are smaller and less lethal. Double rifles are a passion. Calibers are just numbers.

Daryl S, it is illegal in UK though people do use them on Roe deer, it would be legal here in Spain but I have never seen anyone boar hunting with a .22 of any description, usually use 7mm rem mag, .30-06, that sort of thing. I have the .375 and a .44 lever which is a nice little gun at 75 yds or less, best

Highly amused. Thank you.

Hi Daryl, just wrote about this "problem" in "Waidmannsheil" #48, the bulletin of the German Gun Collectors http://www.germanguns.com/ : The .22 Hornet is used in Germany mostly as a target cartridge according to the rules of the German hunters association/DJV, so the European companies load it for accuracy at 100 m, not velocity. So they stick to the original velocity. Remember, the "2400" powder was originally designed to achieve this velocity in the Hornet. It is rarely used for a fox, crow or badger here.

kuduae,

I am not convinced with your explanation. Certainly the Hornet is used a lot in the hunters' competition (DJV Schiessen) in Germany. It is funny though that in my Bavarian Homeland the .222 Remington appeared more often, while the Hornet is predominant in Northern Germany.

But I have never seen a Ferlach combination gun used in such competition.
BTW, Austrian hunters have different competitions and rules, to my knowledge there the Hornet is not allowed.

I will follow Daryl's reasoning: the Hornet in combination guns is fine for small game where you want to avoid a big hole: winter foxes for the pelt, the "kitchen hare", black grouse and capercaillie for trophy mounting...
Too much velocity is bad then.
Further the Hornet is often used in insert barrels for the Drilling's shotgun tube.
I am certainly no expert with these contraptions, but until some years ago the Hornet was considered the maximum in a insert barrel.

Regards,
fuhrmann
