Carp and camping
      #204949 - 11/03/12 08:17 PM

My wife went to Toowoomba for three days shopping and to get away from our Daughter (and me I suppose)
Thought I would take my Daughter fishing on the Balonne river.

By fatboy404 at 2012-03-10

Got some yabbies out of the bore drain, a swag, hot plate and away we went.

By fatboy404 at 2012-03-10
Ended up with 3 Spangled Perch, 1 Catfish and 21 Carp.
Not one yellow belly or Cod.

By fatboy404 at 2012-03-10

My Daughter had a ball.
She said ,"We should go camping everyday".

Good to see she likes camping with Dad. Might one day join you on the pigs.

We used to have yabbies in our local creek. But not now for decades. Probably the creek is too dry and dry for too long each year compared to how it used to be. Probably still have some up river if people haven't over caught them. As they used to do.

Good work mate, get those Carp out of there. She sure looks happy there with Dad, you might have started something guess it takes a while for things to settle down after the flood for the Cod

Pardon me, but what is a Yabbie, or Yabby? Are yabbies bull frogs for their legs - yummy?

My daughter Carol looked about the age of your little girl when she shot her first grouse - with a Zulu, sort of back-end Snider action 12 bore - 2 drams of black and 1oz of 7 1/2's. She also cleaned it herself.

Sure glad you're getting out with her, Neale & it's wonderful she enjoys it.

A type of freshwater Cray fish. Smaller than what you would normally think of a cray fish but the tails are very tasty.

Neale it is good to see your daughter enjoys the outdoors.

Have to admit that if I had enough Yabbies I wouldn't be wetting the line. Yabbies, salt and vinigar or a chilli spice and some cold beers......................Yummmm.

Never seen a yabbie that size. (?)

There are a few species, Cherax destructor is the best known but TAS, WA and Murray River crays are much larger, as is the Eastern Oz freshwater cray.

Yes well ummmmmmm ok Gryphon.

Here are the couple of yabbies left over.
They were the biggest and about the smallest I would eat.

The drain where I got these just has good bait size but a dam near here has the really big "Blue clawed" yabbies that are great to eat.
That dam goes dry for up to 3 months at a time but the yabbies just "shut down" and go into the mud.

"Pointies" are very fine tukka. Pity as there are a few here in the Sinny beach burbs that remain undisturbed. They make a nice cultural counterpoint to the Indian doves, pigeons, Indian mynahs and starlings.

TKS - we have fresh water crayfish in the rivers back East when I was a kid. We used them for bait small mouth and large mouth bass - we didn't eat any, though - thought about it, but didn't - and I don't know why.

Well done you two!

I remember well, catching and eating those nice fat Yabbies, when I lived out there back in the early '60's.

You never heard of Crayfish Gumbo, or Crayfish Jumbalya, or a good old fashioned Crayfish Boil? That's a shame. You missed out on some good eats!
