Poll Question
      #20426 - 04/11/04 04:28 AM

Gentlepeople:

I was laughing my tail off last night looking at the videos on accuratereloading.com (the video's of people shooting large bore rifles) and two questions popped into my head.

So, I'm just curious about the following and would like to see what people say:

1. What is the largest caliber rifle you've ever shot?

and

2. Specifically what rifle have you shot that had the largest recoil?

Thanks,

Clark

A 100 cal Rampart rifle 1" bore

In reply to:

2. Specifically what rifle have you shot that had the largest recoil?

Thanks,

Clark

There are two ways to answer this question! #1 felt recoil, and #2 actual ft lbs of recoil!

#1 The Felt recoil was a 460 WBY Mag with WBY solid factory ammo, in a Wby rifle!

#2 The actual measured recoil, was a 577NE 3" with a 750 gr solid, fired from a Farquarson single shot!

Neither was pleasent to shoot, and both were more than needed for live animals on this Earth today! The rampart rifle would have been the heaviest recoil, if it had not weighed 60 lbs!

.50 3" Sharps.

I think that this one with a 600 gr. bullet and a bunch of 4831 was also the most memorable recoil.

Largest caliber: 54 caliber double barreled muzzleloader

Biggest recoil: A tie between the 458 Winchester in a standard weight magazine rifle and the 357 H&H in an ultralight magazine rifle

Nastiest for small caliber: 32 Special in a Winchester Model 1894 (That stock design leaves something to be desired.)

Having a gunsmith mate who regulates doubles is a big advantage: a couple of .577s, .500 Nitro, plenty of .470s, .465s etc (plus an assortment of bore-guns), one mate with a .505 Gibbs, another with a .460 Weatherby. Because the gun-weight increases with the power of the cartridge, it is very difficult to measure recoil subjectively.

I have sighted-in an 8-pound plastic-stocked .458 guide-rifle that clocked 2120 fps with 500-grainers over my chrony, THAT was interesting! Eight shots from the bench, all but the last one were touching, I held it together OK, but it took a LOT of will-power!

The rifle I remember that bit me the hardest was a BRNO .308 belonging to the son of a friend of mine. He proudly offered it to me for appraisal. The first shot belted me in the chops. Damn! Mustn't have held it right. Mounted it very carefully for a second shot. Blam! belted me in the chops again! Lousy stock fit of course. As I handed it back, that young fellow was quite upset by my suggestion about where he could store his firearm in the short term!

Marrakai

Funny! I had a little .308 O/U Zoli (peace of shit gun) that would get me in the cheek like a punch. I really hated that gun.

1: 505 Gibbs, 12 ib's tamed the recoil, and it is more of a push!

2: 375 H&H in my rather - to - light, Remmington!

Had a guy let me try a Ruger 30.06 in their skelton stock. That was unplesant!!

largest calibre, an 8 bore double underlever blackpowder, forget the maker. Have a 6 bore flintlock by Jover, London, haven't got a mould for it yet.

hardest kicking, a featherweight .35 Newton 1903 Springfield by Sedgely with lots of drop in the stock and no recoil pad. Ouch.

Largest shoulder fired gun: 40mm grenade launcher.

Largest "normal" rifle: A muzzle loader when I was 12 that was a replica of an old Norwegian gun. Don't remember the calibur, but somewhere around .50 cal.
This is the only rifle that really brused my shoulder. The owner loaded it pretty stiffly most likey, as I was blue almost from my elbow to my neck... Being just a stupid kid, I was quite impressed, and rather proud, as I even hit the rock I was aiming at...

Erik D.

Seems I forgot about the 84mm CG that Tunofun posted and thus reminded me of. So that was obviously bigger than the 40mm. But then I wouldn't perhaps call the CG a "rifle shaped shoulder fired weapon" which is more in line with the poll! Even though you do use your shoulder...

Largest: 500 Jeffery

Most felt recoil: 500 Jeffery, 10 lbs 4 oz rifle shooting 535 grain Woodleigh over 116 grains of Rel 15. That's right around 100 ft-lbs of recoil and got my attention. The biggest before that was factory loaded 400 grain Fed Prem in 416 Rigby. The Jeffery load was a whole new experience.

Largest: 84mm Carl Gustav Anti Armor Weapon using heat ammo (read: LOUD! )

Hardest: My 8lb .458WM 6 quick shots in a row is all I can take for the day... Hehehe!

Tunofun,

The CG 84mm is certainly a fun and interesting experiance to shoot (or load)! We used to get a kick out of lining up stuff 10 meters behind, and letting the back-blast blow it away.

The 66 mm M-72 was also fun, and they're definantly a lot nicer (lighter) to carry even though they aren't in the same class as a CG 84mm!

Hi Clark,

Here are some big things I have shot and the recoil:

600 Nitro Express Heym. I felt nauseous each time I shot it and needed a 10 minute rest between shots. Max of 3 shots per day. The muzzle went almost vertical with each shot, and I never dared shoot it off the bench.

.585 Nyati model 70. It moved my shoulder back about a foot with each shot. My max for the day was 10-15 shots and if I wanted to shoot more than 5 shots, I needed to take Tylenol before driving to the range. I could shoot it from the bench reasonably accurately.

.500 Nitro Express double. It does not move my body much and does not have much muzzle rise. I can get off a second shot very quickly. The recoil does hurt a bit but I can make it through 30 shots in a day.

.470 Nitro Express double. Relatively mild recoil compared to the .500 NE.

.470 Capstick and .458 Lott. These are pussycat calibers when the rifle weighs 10-11 pounds and when the stock is properly designed. I can shoot 3 shots touching from the bench, and 50 or 75 shots in a day would not be a problem. But lighter versions of these rifles, or rifles in these calibers with a standard factory stock will hurt.

.416 Rigby CZ550 with hogback stock. Lots of muzzle rise on this one which I do not like in a scoped rifle. Due to poor stock design, this rifle is more difficult to shoot than my 500 NE.

.416 Rem Sig Blaser toy gun. This gun feels queer and recoils in an odd way, although the recoil is really not bad at all.

Largest was a 500 Nitro double-unpleasant till the weight was increased to 10.5 lbs.No trouble then to shoot in the field.

The most vicious by far-my 378 Japanese Weatherby-even old
Roy referred to it as the "stallion" because it kicks the

ErikD, damn right! The CG 84mm rocks, just dont open your mouth while firing! When we go to the range to fire them, and a new fellow is learning the ropes, we always tell him to open his water bottles or they will explode... The poor guy always ends up very wet! Hehehe

The 66 is cool too, but the 84 has got the goods!
