The potjie. The cast iron three legged cooking pot of Southern Africa.

For cooking over the coals and also coals on top. Perfect for the nomadic 'safari' life.

Coals on top. Just like a camp oven.

Meat usually goes at the bottom.

Yum.

More Yum.

Pleasant fireside cooking.

In a large potjie and the right circumstances, one could even take a bath ...

The good old canvas or hessain water bags. Cooled water by evaporation.

Used these in the 70's and also on my first ever hunt in the arid Northern Flinders Ranges.

Good kit.

Even had the right name.

Yes Robert, they are still made. I found a few for sale on the net at various Aussie retailers and camping supplies shops. I would think you could source some in the USA as well. Search using "hessian water bag" "for sale". Maybe subsitute "canvas" for hessian.

The quality didn't look to the same standard as the old ones, from the photos at least.

I also wanted to find a big round hanging water bag with a hose and lid like we used to have. A stupid employee decided to stab it so it didn't last for more than a few weeks back decades ago.

Was good for storing maybe 15 to 20 litres and having relatively cool water to drink. Easy access too.

Some of the 'necessities' of the luxury classic safari.

The vintage safari tent.

The silverware box of cutlery. No plastic or tinny forks here.

The folding camp chair and stool for booting ones knee high leather boots on.

Brass lantern polished bright.

Hessian foot mat.

Hammock for those energetic afternoons.

Back in the days of First Class Steamer Ship travel, one could take many luxuries. Wny not one's library too, for the three or four month safari plus a month or more of ship travel!

Louis Vuitton steamer trunk library from 1923.

TR had one of those on his famous Safari. He called it the "Pigskin Library". Those were the days, eh? But then again, very few could go on Safari back then.

In the US they were called Lister (Lyster) bags. Find em on ebay.

Apropos of nothing: Can you picture what it would be like to start planning a classic safari, replete with a cruise to Dar es Salam? Six months gone, living in a tent, shower consists of a bucket with a nozzle, etc.

My first safari in 1995 was to a tent camp in Botswana up on the Okavango. Chef cooked on an open fire and steel plate. Shower was as above. Shower water smelled faintly of smoke from the cooking fire. We did have safari trucks, but I got my sitatunga out of a mokorro (dugout). I'll never forget it.

I am sure some gentlemen would have ordered one of those streamer trunk libraries with specially ordered and bound books to fill it too. Just for the safari.

The Aussie Camp Oven

Like a potje without the legs and wider and flatter. Coals can be put on the top of the lid as it as a lip to aid all round "oven" style cooking.

Great meals can be cooked by preparing the vegetables and say a goat leg, with water or other liquid. Put them in the camp oven, dig a hole, lay some coals from the fire at the bottom of the hole. Put the camp oven in. Some more coals on the lid. Bury the camp oven with the soil. Go hunting for the afternoon or day. Come home and dig out the camp oven and you have a delicious well cooked roast leg of goat and roasted vegetables.

BTW there's a campfire variant that uses a plough disc (harrow?) with a folding tripod arrangement as a sorta wok. Works for me and much lighter. Otherwise a traditional underground oven utilising the (gutted) animal's body (skin on) and adding heated stones within the abdomen.

I used one of those Hessian water bags. It was hard to get use to the mouth full of Hessian when utilising the last bit of water.
