Echols .505 Gibbs Photos
      #202405 - 13/02/12 07:15 PM

Hello All

Here are a couple of photos I'm posting for a friend, on behalf of DArcy Echols.

"This is the most recent 505 Gibbs I have finished. Made on a H&W Magnum Mauser with our Magazine assembly, magnum bolt stop, barrel work & sight system, hard ware, etc. The stock style was made per clients request and to his dimensions. It is headed for Botswana this summer. The rifle was engraved by Lisa Tomlin."
Many Thanks

DArcy Echols

I think you will all agree - it is a magnificent piece of work.

Cheers.

GG

Yes, that would do...
I don't even mind the gold so much on this one.

Reminds me of the first time I took my newly re stocked original 505 Gibbs out. I was on a trailer behind a Quad bike, went round a corner, trailer tipped, me and the bike
went flying. Ooopps, scratch and dents on new stock !

In 80 years the gun had probably gone through worse so couldn't complain and now it looks battle scarred.

I really do like the above gun by GG, I see some custom big bores that I don't like but that one is superb.

It's a great looking rifle, so good I would worry about taking it into the bush. A plain English double rifle might cost even more but I guess then you are paying for what it can supposedly do that a magazine rifle might not.

Nice looking rifle. Personally, I like the Hartmann & Weiss lines more. The gold inlay is not to my taste.

That beautiful rifle is all mine. I'm looking forward to many years of enjoyment. A funny sidenote on scratching the rifle. I told D'Arcy I was going to roll on the ground a bit once it was finished just so I wouldn't be nervous about the first scratch. Well I didn't quite have the nerve to do that, but I can assure you I will be hunting with the rifle.

Thanks for the nice comments, D'Arcy is one of the best rifle builders out there!

Bryan

Well done on commissioning it.

What bullets are you going to use ?

I used 525gn Woodleigh's then when the 600gn Woodleighs came out tested those and like them.

Good luck on your hunt.

Congratulations sir and welcome to NE. I hope you can post a full hunt report when you use it. I love the idea of the rear reciever (Ghost ?) aperture for a longer sight radius. Was that at your request ?

I really like the blue color of the screws contrasting with the black of the trigger guard. Nice touch!

Thanks everyone, look for a full hunt report in August after I return from Botswana.

Tophet1 - The rear ghost ring rear site evolved once I decided I was not going to scope the rifle. I must give D'Arcy the credit for listening to me as the customer explain my intended use and presenting me with the pluses and minuses for different sight systems. We concluded this would be a perfect solution for this rifle. I love it, site acquisition is very fast!

500Nitro - Currently I'm shooting Barnes 525gr banded solids. We tested Barnes TSX's, Norma and Woodleigh 525gr bullets. The rifle feeds and shoots them all well!

I also enjoy the improved peripheral vision iron sights give. Straight shooting and good luck.

Enjoy the hunt and the beautiful rifle.
It's so nice to see this high art has such good support, and that there are such fine rifle builders to do the job.

Cheers

Stunning!

Any body able to clarify the origin of the stock wood?
Like Turkish Circassian walnut, maybe or???

Thanks in advance.

I applaud the choice of going with iron sights. The peep sight seems as quick as an express, but also opens things up even more with more light available and limited coverage of what's in front of you. It is a good choice in my opinion.

Well done.

Too many people today shy away from irons and have the idea good shooting cannot be achieved without a scope. They merely need to practise to become proficient with their use. Irons are not the hindrance that a scope can be in close quarters, and they are surprisingly good at longer ranges too, even on the smaller species of game.

Daryl S,

I agree, I think we (shooters/hunters) are far too quick to scope a rifle. I guess we are searching for every advantage we can get. I grew up with iron sights and moved away from them over the years. I came back to iron sights while hunting Buffalo in thick cover (Botswana) several years ago.

I live in then state of Pennsylvania where the primary game is whitetail deer and the average shot is probably less than 75 yards. 95 out of 100 rifles are scoped, why? Probably due to marketing!

Either way I'm looking forward to trying out the sights on game in August.

Bryan
