Paper Patch 399's in my .416 Rigby

Well AFRO408 is a keen caster and Paper Patch Boolit maker and he wanted to see if his designs work at full throttle.

He sent me some paper patched cast projectiles, which (with the paper) averaged 399 grains each. I smeared Lee liquid Alox over the paper and let them sit overnight. Then loaded them into .416 Hornady hulls over 105 grains of AR2213sc (Elmer Keiths .416 Rigby Load). OAL is 3.420.

The cases are well flared but I had trouble getting the projectiles to enter the case with any less of a 'flare'.

Ready to try tomorrow on the range.

As requested, here is a couple of pics of the mold and bullets, also a link to a short video of how I wrap the paper jacket on.
The bullets are cast from Wheel Weight alloy + a little Tin and cast at about 500deg C.

Thx AFRO. Next time I'll lube them with Case Lube and not Liquid Alox. My Bad.

I've used a thinner lube made from good, first run filtred Beeswax & Vaseline about 55% Vaseline, 45% Beeswax (the mix isn't critical). I rub it onto the patched bullet, then seat the bullet in the case. The same materials, mixed 60% BW/40%Vas. works just fine as an all purpose bullet lube, for black powder or smokeless loads for decent sized bullets. I've driven .45 cal. WW alloyed bullets to well over 2,000fps without leading and sub MOA accuracy using the slower rifle powders.
I've not found Olive Oil to work well, due to lack of desired accuracy when mixed with BW.

Well I've hit a few problems. Cartridges won't chamber and seating new projectiles collapse the shoulder.

Might have to size the patched bullets down to .416" to .418" if they are oversize?

Newly annealed brass - too soft, perhaps? Different, thicker paper? It's got to be something fairly simple.

I'll start measuring the first and second batch of boolits sent to me. At $5 a case I don't want to collapse too many more.

I may have to pack it all up AFRO and come over for a session

G'Day Fella's,

I was contemplating paper patching a couple of different caliber bullets ( .270 to 7mm & .416 to .423"). I remember reading about a book by Mr ? Mathews on the subject, that is available from Wolfe Publishing in the US. These are the publishers of the very good, Rifle and Handloader magazines.

I remember also reading about the type of paper you need to use for paper patching and the fact that you can't use just any old pages, as a lot of paper makers use clay in making the paper! This clay can be quite abrasive to the metal of your rifle barrel, so they recommend you use "Onion Skin" type paper! Go grab an Onion from the pantry and have a look at it, The dry outer Onion Skin I mean! Then go to a source/shop that sells quality paper and ask them about the Clay Content in the Onion Skin type paper and get a few pages. and go from there!

I've not heard of clay content in paper but also suspect it might be abrasive.

I have used commercial high concentrate "cotton rag" paper for patching since the 70's - seems to me at the time I bought a huge supply, it was from Trackofthewolf.

Symplicity patterns use an onion skin paper which is about the thinnest available - .0015" I think.

In the States, Buffalo Arms sells or used to sell several different thicknesses of paper specifically for patching cast bullets.

You should be able to push the PP bullet, through your .416 sizer, without damaging the paper.
I sized one down to .410, the other day, and it did no damage to the paper at all.

Yep, kaolin [china clay] is often used as a coating/filler in white papers, to increase the 'whiteness'. It's one of the major markets for the stuff.
