Camp Cooley - Double Rifle Shooters Society
      #20223 - 30/10/04 01:30 PM

I am interested in how these shoots at your DRSS's shoots at Camp Cooley go.

I believe pigs and eland have been hunted in the past. Are the eland wild or is it really just some fun harvesting some meat?

Close range or longer range shooting?

What do these sorts of hunts cost? (PM me if you wish).

Just interested. Thanks.

NitroX, These are very informal, fun hunts amoung a few friends (DRSS)! The Ranch it's self is 16,000 acres, and the Russian Boar, varments, and native deer roam free over it all. The land is very hilly, and covers river bottom, as well as Yopon Holly bush that is so thick you can't see three feet in front of you, with about 100 ft, open lanes cut through it, leaving alternating lanes of holly, and open seeded with coastal bermuda grass for cattle grazing. There is a 1000 acre high fence area, in the middle of the ranch, with exotics, and Boar as well, as native deer. The land inside the High fence is exactly like the land outside the fence. The exotics are not overly bothered by the sight of a vehicle, but get out of it, and it is a run away at once. The Eland are hunted pritty hard, so are very spooky, and if hunted on foot, they are a real fun hunt, not to mention the meat is excelent. We usually hunt Cows, as they are a lot cheaper to hunt. When handicaped by being on foot, and the yopon, as well as the boggs along the river, and the creeks, and hunting with a double rifle, it makes for a great get together!

If you are one to hunt from a car, with a long range rifle, then this is not a real hunt for the exotics, like any place the animals are not overly excited by the sight of a hunting car, as long as you don't get too close. The Boar, however, are hunted by everyone in this part of the state, and are wild as hell. They run at the sight of a car.

At the last shoot, the day fee was $100 per day, which includes guide,to drop you in areas to hunt, and return to pick you up at a predetermined place, and time, for the Boar, but the exotics he guides you, to witness the kill, or wounding. Blood drawn, he belongs to you. Lodging,in a large clean bunk house, where you bring food, and cook for yourself, is included.

There are trophy fees for what you shoot. A cow Eland is, or was $700, and the Boars $100 each

Other exotics include Wildebeast,Impala, bush buck, zebra, amoung others. Also, there are all manner of varments on the ranch like coyote, fox, raccoon, oposum, bobcat. The prices for the exotics are available from the ranch! I don't have the phone number handy, but can get it if anyone wants it!

Hope this answers some questions!

No problem, Judge,Rusty told me who the post was from! You lucky dog, you know my passion is Westley Richards double rifles, and my favorite is the 450/400. I don't have a 450/400 anymore, and I surley miss it! Mine was a Army & Navy , but my wish is for one with the old W-R marque!

NE450No2:

I have the exact duplicate of Mbogo375's that you have seen over on AR, (both boxlocks) except mine is a .450/400 3 1/4" instead of his 3" version. I haven't taken delivery on it yet (long story), but will about Christmas.

A long time friend of mine (who I had no idea was a collector of double rifles) decided to get rid of some and invited me to his home in Virginia to see them. He had several great ones, including a H&H Dominion in 8x57 with factory claw mounts and an unfired Westley-Richards droplock, two barreled set (.500 N.E. and .300 H&H).

I'll have it for Camp Cooley! Gotta sell my .475 N.E. and .375 Express, though .

I'm looking forward to seeing ya'll in Dallas!

Shame you have to sell the other 2, but I think you will find the 450/400 3 1/4" is a most excellent calibre.
Mine has killed deer, several pigs, 2 caribou, and a black bear. Either one of the 450/400's is probably the best allround double rifle calibre for the modern sport hunter.
I sure wish Chapuis, Heym, etc. would make them.
My rifle weighs 9 1/4 lbs and is a joy to carry and shoot.

JudgeG:
Glad to hear you have acquired a .400 double. I have been hunting with one for quite a while now, pretty-much exclusively except for a few forays with a .577 Light Nitro! Mine is chambered for the 3-inch cartridge, which is entirely 'pukka' for a Jeffery double of course. The cartridge is fabulous for big boars and buffalo bulls, and the rifle in my custody is definitely responsible for the greater part of past successes. Here's a couple for your interest:
http://www.hotkey.net.au/~orrs/OctoberHunt.htm

http://www.hotkey.net.au/~orrs/LongShot.htm

We all look forward to hearing about your inevitable success at Camp Cooley! Meanwhile, here's hoping the .475 N.E. and .375 Express end up with worthy new owners.
Cheers

Thanks for the answers and reply. I knew the DRSS was an informal group of friends. Great idea!

Love the little hunts you do at Camp Cooley. Low key hunts with friends using double rifles. Another great idea.

Gents:

Can you give me some more information about the hunt at Camp Cooley? I'm new to this forum. I love the idea of fellow DR owners getting together to hunt with their beloved weapons.

Where is Camp Cooley? When do you hunt? I saw the prices--great for a married man and new daddy....

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!

We usually schedule our Camp Cooley hunt in the Texas off season, when it is still kind of cool. The ranch is located just off I45 west of Buffalo near Ridge TX. Just about halfway down I45 between Dallas and Huntsville.
I think their hunting web site is www.huntcampcooley.com
We members of the DRSS hunt everything on foot. The guides stay with you when your hunting exotics. When we hunt pigs we go out on our own most of the time. If Ryan wants to come with us he can he is a fun guy to be around.
There is a very nice bunkhouse with a large kitchen.
They take good care of your meat, and they have a walk in cooler. Eland meat is very good, and they are fun to hunt,
especially with iron sighted double rifles.
We usually hunt for about 3 days.
There is also a spot to go and shoot so we can check out each others double rifles. I think the last time we were there there was 10 or 12 double rifles present.
It is worth the trip just to have a visit.

When I started the DRSS I knew it would lead to the exchange of information, ideas and history from other double rifle owners. What I received as a bonus was the pleasure of hunting and spending many wonderful hours in the company of some of the finest folks anyone could ever know.

Just when I thought I knew a bit about double rifles and stalking game on foot I got to spend some quality time with the likes of Mac, NE450#2, 400Nitro Express, PWN375 just to name a few. Great times afield with our doubles and some grand times around the table with good food and fine single malt scotch whisky.

Camp Cooley has provided us with an opportunity to hunt and have fellowship with kindred souls.

Rusty,

Would love to attend as well. The little scoped Chapuis 9.3x74 should do OK for such endeavors. I usually come to the Houston area a couple of times a year and might well be able to move my schedule around so that things overlap.

Is a Woodleigh or a Nosler 250 or 286 the prefered medicine given the ranges there?

Did a little piggie hunt in the Hill country during February but didn't take a double. Amazing how well a .338 works on piggies though ;>)
