I've only used Woodley's in my WR 470 - a 500g soft point traversed 5 feet of Cape Buffalo and weighed 505g after recovery. Solids went straight through. They also explode rabbits better than anything else I've used - makes 130g HPs out of a 300 Weatherby look like an air rifle.

They must be quite the bullet to grow bigger as they go.

AussieMike: Uh, did you clean the meat off the bullet before you weighed it? :-) Or did you mean 405 grains?

That being said, I think you are on to something.... bullets that gain weight after they hit something. I like the idea. Work up a process and patent that puppy!!

The best bullet I have every used hands down was this year and those were Mike Bradys (Northfork bullets) monolithic cup points..They penitrate like a solid and kill like a soft, they are, in effect, an expanding solid, and I don't know how you can beat that...They kill buffalo like the hammer of Thor..I shot 4 bulls with them and joined in on the shooting of two more, and these puppies flat worked.

Mike graciously furnished me with these experimental bullets this year to test on buffalo in 404 and 470..I was totally impressed and you can shoot them in a double rifle as they have the pressure rings..I had to up my .470 load by two grs. to get them to POI as the pressure was less than my Woodlieghs...Give Mike a call if your interrested in him producing these bullets..

I recovered about 7 of these bullets btw with lenthwise shots taken ohterwise they all made two holes...I can email you photos of the bullets but do not have the expertise to post them on this board..

That said I like Woodleighs for about anything, and have great luck with them over the years on everything, but they do not have the penitration of the new Northforks.

I suspect that there was a little bit of bone embedded in the lead core. I use Woodley SP a lot on local ferals - goats and pigs and never recover them - even from the 303. I now never use anything else in low velocity rounds like the 275 Rigby 175g, 318WR etc. For 300 Mags etc I use barnes X.

Hello Ray,

I have had tremendous luck with Woodleighs. Just one mans opinion.

I do not have a 470, but based on the bullets I recovered this June in Zim I can highly recommend the Woodleigh Soft and Solids [480 grains] and the 500 grain Swift A Frames that I used in my 450 No2. I recovered the softs from buff and the solids from buff and elephant.

Here's another vote for Woodleighs. I know we get them cheaper here in Australia than east of the big pond, but even at twice the price I'd still be buying them for hunting. The Weldcore's combination of super expansion coupled with high weight retention is unsurpassed IMHO.

...and all this with match-accuracy! Woodleighs are consistently the most accurate bullets in any of my large-bore rifles. This from my Manton .470 yesterday after work:

500gr Woodleigh Weldcore RNSN, 103gr AR2213, Fed 215 primer.
4 shots at 50 metres (right, left, right, left)

Typical Woodleigh performance!
