Nice WR falling block for sale
      #201766 - 06/02/12 01:04 AM

I wish I had the extra money. Seems real nice. Don't know anything about the caliber though. 5th one down. I guess it's a rook rifle. Shame, it'd be so much more in a larger caliber. A very expensive rook rifle.

Does look to be a nice rifle but surely would be over $10K US all in. But, if the condition report is accurrate and it is really that good, maybe it is not too far out of line.
I have my eye on the Westley '97 in the upcoming Julias auction. What a beauty that is...

Expensive rook rifle for sure, but if actually is in the stated *unfired original* condition I can understand the price.
I have yet to find such a thing though.
Exactly how does someone "un-fire" a rifle anyway..?

The 16bore carbine at the bottom of the first linked page is awfully cool.

Cheers

I have been admiring it for some time but a touch too much - if it was larger calibre or a George Gibbs in .461....................

If he has it at the upcoming Arms Fair I will see if I can take some pics

As promised, sorry for the poor pics, there were lots of people about & I rushed a bit!

The dealer said he thought there had never been the other leaves

It is as good as it looks, appearing (to me)as original and untouched, if it had been completely refurbished I could not tell
The bore looked very good but I only had a quick look

"The dealer said he thought there had never been the other leaves"

So what he is saying is he thinks they were never installed and it left the factory like that.

I hate to say it but I find that hard to believe.

Doesn't seem plausible at all.

Well, we all know that in the English gun trade their are exceptions to the general rules, but considering that Single leaf sights were available ....... you know what I mean.

.461 isn't exactly a short range calibre !!!

I also wondered when he made the comment, he tends to sell military and muzzle loaders, I believe he was trying to work out why the leaf was missing.

I would imagine he bought it in as it is, thought it was always like that and did not know for sure. It is an anomaly but there was nothing else that concerned me at all although I do not know of any provenance

The calibre is .255 Jeffery which may be relevant - I made the comment about a Gibbs .461 as the ideal rifle I would pay that sort of money for!

I just went to the books out of curiosity as I never had heard of the round either. Here's what I found:

This scan is from the ever most helpful reference, George A. Hoyem, The History and Development of Small Arms Ammunition, Vol. 3, Armory Publications, 2005, page 157.

Anyone who does not have Mr. Hoyem's work should get it.

This should be a superlative round for shooting rats, if you can find brass for it!

Colin Greenwood says the brass can be made from 32/20 and 25cal pistol bullets can be used.
Pretty little cartridge.

Do you think it is .25 caliber or 6.5mm? Under the Brit. system I would think a .255 designation would be the bore. Their normal designation for 6.5mm is .256".

He notes that the bullet is .255".
The .25ACP bullets are normally .251" but I dont know what a cast 25cal bullet would measure up as.

Looks like to me that theres a pretty good gap between the action and top of the stock and also the lever has a big gap where it locks up and the release is.

FWIW some of the repro actions vary significantly in dims. Underlever and Rockdoc might care to comment.

So it's a 25-20 at half throttle.
A parlor rifle.

I saw the gaps too, wonder about the condition report.

Neat anyway.

I know it would be sacrilage but if it was not in "unfired" condition would it be capable of handling a more potent round? If it is .25 cal could it safely be rechambered to .25-35?

unfired....HA.....not likely with the issues noted. It could be re-barreled to many other cartridges.

Funny I didn't notice...
This gun is pictured on p.221 in Winfer's Westley Richards book and noted as coming from the Winfer collection!
I need to figure out how to "unfire" my own guns!
Maybe start with some Scotts "Rifle-Grow" for the bores! Or is that "Barrel Booster"?
