1950 Military .44 Special
      #198876 - 07/01/12 03:16 PM

Here are a few photos of my 1950 Military .44 Special for your enjoyment. It sports the more common 5" barrel. The grips are a little bunged up on the right hand panel, but overall it's in pretty nice shape. I got this one while horse trading when I was a student at Purdue. I've fired a total of one box of reloads through it. A forum I found on the web says serial numbers within about 50 or so before this one were shipped in 1955. Maybe someday I'll find a box I can afford for it.

Well Phil you just stuffed it for me. I was going to tell him it was just another clunky old Smith that would probabley fall to bits by the time he put another box of ammo through it. Then I was going to offer to take it of his hands for the cost of postage

Good looking and good condition bit of kit that is.

Forgive my ignorance but which service was it made for? I had assumed all American forces used the .45 ACP.

As far as I know, that is the name it was given by Smith & Wesson. In the years before they gave them model numbers, each model had a name, for another example, Model of 1950 Target .44, as illustrated a few posts down. This one of mine is also now known as a Pre-21 Model.
If I'm mistaken, someone please correct me.

They were for a while used by some law enforcement departments, not military.

That's the correct designation. It is "The .44 Hand Ejector 4th Model Military (a.k.a. Model of 1950 .44 Military)" or "pre-Model 21". Of course, when it was made nobody knew it as a "pre-Model 21" because there was no such thing as a Model 21 as S&W didnt use model numbers at the time.

Very nice example of a fairly rare revolver. Thanks for posting.

After WWII S&W started marking their handguns "MARCAS REGISTRADAS," Spanish for registered trademark (presumably in response to an influx of Brazilian copies). I'm guessing that this is one of the earliest examples so marked. Is that about right?

Also, weren't the Brazilian guns made on equipment acquired from S&W?

I was a little shocked when i read "Purdue" in the first few scentences of a post on this site! I've been there! And they took a boat load of my money! Unexpected on such a global site. Awesome little gun you have there! I hope you're a member over on ingo!(ingunowners.com) I'm a handgunner myself, but i have nothing quite as nice as this!
