.600 Nitro on a Ruger No.1 ?!?
      #201052 - 29/01/12 10:44 PM

I didn't think this would fit, if its for real?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBCe8ld3kik&feature=youtu.be

There was also a thread on another forum about it (Not AR, glocksomething or another).
Can find it if you's wish, but doesnt give much/any info on it, just mentions after extensive modification etc and that it was a .585 Nyati they re-did to .600 Nitro.

If anyone has more info, let us know!

Cheers,
Troy.

I think someone in Aus did a 600 Nitro on a Ruger No 1.

It was quite a few years ago.

I agree. A guy on AR15.com was recently talking about a friend of his who is doing this build-it might be the person in the linked video. Seems like a very light gun for that big round-almost as brutal as Bigdog's .600 Encore. Would be neat to see though.

Years ago, in the 70's I'm sure, Les Bauska had some Ruger #1 actions cast up somewhat oversize and turned them into .600 Nitros. The reason for being oversize was to give enough meat for the rim cuttouts, I believe as well as for the threaded shank.

This is what I was told, then.

I do not know if a regular #1 is large enough.

I don't think it's a regular 600 NE chambering. I believe they use 577 NE cases opened up to take 600 NE bullets.

I'll send the maker an email and find out, if anyone is interested I'll post the answers here.

If you're after a big cal Ruger No.1 you should take a look at the one in the classifieds in 577 NE.

I've seen that one, and as tempting as it is I just don't have the funds. A Ruger No.1 in .577 NE is on the list for one day though.
Is it the same rifle listed on Usedguns.com.au last year? Built by Kudu?

Gents - I've got a Ruger #1 in 450 NE. it's the Boddington series. I've put 10 full-tilt-and-boogie rounds through it. OUCH isn't the word. On the scale it weighs a tad over 7 lb. Think that has something to do with the recoil?

Ed Hammond over at Nyati, Inc, worked up some reduced load 350gr and 300gr bullets that are fairly easy on the shoulder, but the 480gr factory stuff is waaay too hard to shoot. I'm using a PAST pad and a recoil pad on the stock. I'm going for Magna Brake and mercury in the stock. I hope that will tame the beast.

Otherwise, I'll sell it to one of you at a reasonable price. Let you break blood vessels in your shoulder.

Point being, a 600NE with a 900gr bullet at 1950 fps had better have a 12-15 lb #1, or it will turn into a safe queen. I have met Rob Garnick and shot his 600 Overkill. Not bad at 2100 fps, but it's a lot heavier than the #1.

If memory serves me right, I believe SSK Industries here in the states use to advertise 600NE conversions on the #1. Not sure why, were would you stuff enough lead to make it shoot-able? chuckT.

Chuck - that was one of the reasons Les Bauska had oversized actions cast - for the mass and geometry with heavier barrels I'd imagine.
There's got to be some of those around, somewhere.

Quite a few single-shot .600NEs were made. They weren't all doubles.

One of the original single shot 600NE's lives in Australia (or last time I heard of it is was), it is a brute of a thing. You need a gun bearer to carry it or be built like a weight lifter.

The Ruger No 1 here for sale weighs 12.5lbs and is very mild to shoot, lots of recoil energy but a very slow push rather than a slap and thats with 750's crony'd at 2100fps. The trouble with Rugers in big cals is getting the weight up to reasonable levels, I had to get 2 mercury reducers added, and the barrel left very heavy to ballance out the extra 2lb's in the butt. The island sights, barrel band and oversize stock bolt also help to add weight.

Steve

Yeah, I'm going to have to add some weight forward of the new balance point if I add 2 lb of mercury. Plus, I imagine it will be a PH's enemy with a muzzle brake. It's either that or don't shoot it.

My Rifle dosn't have a muzzle brake, it simply isn't needed. If I were you I'd think of adding 2 in the butt, and maybe some lead in the forend to balance it out? My rifle is a little front heavy but that helps with the muzzle climb.
