Ruger #1 accuracy.
      #200648 - 26/01/12 11:06 AM

I'm a new member here but a long time shooter and hunter. About 35 years ago I bought a #1 in 3oo win mag. I took several deer and coyotes with it but it never shot as good as I thought it should.
It's been preety much a safe queen for most of its life. About a year ago I installed a Hicks device hoping that it would straighten out my flyer problem. No help!!!! So it sat again. Then I asked on another forum about the problem and a fellow on that site suggested that I make sure the 1/4 rib not touch the reciever. It was most definately touching so I took it off and filed an .080" gap between the rib and the reciever. WOW!!!! This rifle with the first load thru it and 160 gr bullets shot a .462" 5 shot group!!! Next load with 180 gr bullets shot a .602 group!! Now its time to work on loads and getting the Hicks device tuned up. Now I have a rifle that I can vaporize grey diggers at long range with and hunt my favorite Roosevelt elk also. FRJ

FJR - the touching 1/4 rib is a good start. It cured my wild groups right off the bat. Aside from bedding the barrel onto the hanger, that's it for the .218Bee. The 7x57 needed only bedding as the 1/4 rib was already clear by .010".
It is a good idea to soak the 1/4 rib screws in penetrating oil for a few days before trying to remove them.

Instead of buying that Hicks device I put a rubber O ring over the screw threads (Between the barrel and the forearm) for the forearm. It relieves the foreend pressure.

I clean out the forearm, removing any high spots and bed a pressure point at the tip.. This is my .303 #1

I have a #1 in 9.3X74R that I traded for, from one of the members on this forum.
It's very accurate with 3 loads I have tried.
I never did a thing to it. It shoots about 3/4" at 100 yds and so I could not be happier.

Phillip, How much pressure do you use when making a pressure point? Thanks
