Mauser Serial Number

Hi guys,

Have an old Mauser hunting rifle and was wondering best sources to go to find out who bought/when made/etc. I am happy to PM serial number and related info if anyone has any good sources. Thx so much!

I know, I know I should have looked around prior to posting. Serial number is 1157XX. Seems like post 1934 based on other posts. Double triggers, claw quick detach scope mount, flat bolt handle, and the most interesting front sight, there are beads that actually rotate within the front sight and each has a different color bead. 30-06. Anyone know any good Mauser smiths to do a mild resto in NY area? Thx

Thx Don. I posted something about this rifle a while ago. If I could figure out how to post pics easily I would. The rifle belonged to a guy who shot much game for the Museum of Natural History in NY (Don't know his name. I had a very busy past few years so am just picking this up where I left off.... Do you think this was a factory gun? Seems like a few somewhat non-standard features on this rifle. But maybe not by 1935 standards.

sounds like it might be a factory Type M, although I don't have a reference book handy and don't recall whether the Type M was made in .30-06 caliber. Would be nice to see the photos.

You can upload them to photobucket or a similar site and then link to that site. I think there are instructions somewhere on the forum. Or you could email the photos to someone and have them post them.

Bill,

Wow, Is the safety modified for scope use? Never seen that before. Do you have the scope that goes along with the rifle?

I think Griffin & Howe in Bernardsville, NJ could help you with pad replacement and cleanup.

Definitely not a Type M as they were stocked all the way to the muzzle. Beyond that, very hard to say without higher resolution photos. Interesting rifle.

Agree re: G and H, but you may want to ask them to use a Silvers pad (which is what appears to be on the rifle now). Otherwise you'll get the G and H pad, which is ok but is lighter in color and not nearly as attractive.

I am going to take some more pics in higher resolution. I am no mauser expert, but given who apparently used this rifle, my guess would be it was semi-custom and I have never seen a sight like the one on the front - as i said it is a 4-beaded swivel machined into the front sight base and swivels offering different color beads. It had an old zeiss scope with claw rings, which were lost during a move (I know, bummer). I am going to give G&H a call. I think they are the ones to take this to. Not looking to spend an arm and a leg though and would love to locate a period appropriate zeiss scope with claw mounts. I tried to get this done about 3 years ago, but some family issues prohibited this.... so here I am again. Thanks for everyone's input. Much appreciated.
