458's turn !
      #200194 - 21/01/12 12:18 PM

Well I got my Brno 458 back from Afro408 (Tony Small) yesterday after having some work done to tidy it up.
This was the one I bought cheap at AAA awhile back.

Tony fitted cross bolts, bedded it,fitted a new recoil pad, made a new trigger (as I hate the set ones and I can't buy the curved ones anywhere)and honed the sears, fitted a barrel band sling swivel, filed the rear sight into a shallow "V" , and most importantly got it to feed 45-70 projectiles as I will mainly use this for group 2 at the Big Game Rifle club.

My first load is 72 grains of 2206H under the 405 grain Remmington 45-70 projectiles for 2283 fps.

Here is two shots @ 100 yards with the express sights off hand (not bad seeing as I am just aiming at the centre of the A4 piece of paper because I cant see the target.

By fatboy404 at 2012-01-20
Took it out this morning pig chasing but only got three pigs as old mate wanted to muster some goats so I only went into his two eastern paddocks.
The dogs caught two and I shot one.
Here is the one pig I shot. You can see where the bullet entered the shoulder and it exited out his neck.

By fatboy404 at 2012-01-20
This is the biggest the dogs caught.

By fatboy404 at 2012-01-20

Shot this fella too as I needed to pull the trigger on something.
Shot him right handed too off the bike ( I am left handed).

By fatboy404 at 2012-01-20
Would like to thank Tony for some more great work.
Cheers Mate.

I like what he did with the barrel band. Indexed crossbolts. Gotta love it.

That's a lot of blood on the outside. How big was the exit hole, Neale?

How about what happened at impact?
I've been told that that velocity with that bullet will just about cut a whitetail just about into 2 chunks. The dog's hide must be tough.

He was only about 40 yards and I hit him in the shoulder as you can see.
Because of the angle it exited out his neck and dropped him like a stone, just nervous kicking.

I expected a huge exit hole but there was none. Broken shoulder, three ribs on the off side, two ribs on the near side + heaps of blood as you can see.

Had a bit of a dig but am unsure if the bullet hung together and exited intact or if it "blew up" and only a little piece came out. Should of looked more but was too keen to keep going after my dogs.

John.
We are lucky to have Tony close and keen.

From the target you would definately hit the pigs 'Dairy Aire' Looks to be another good purchase.

Cheers Mate,

Here is a head shot nanny I got this afternoon for meat.
This is the good side.

By fatboy404 at 2012-01-21

Looks like good meat.
Nice bit of fat and was soft to cut.

By fatboy404 at 2012-01-21

Jeff.
Plenty good enough for a head shot with a rest.
It's not a show piece just a user.

85% weight retention. Just like a big wad of bubblegun - soft, thin jacket and pure lead core. They are famous for this.

You can see by the turned back strip of jacket, it barely and finally turned sideways when about spent.

Have you tried the hornady 350 round nose, I run them with 2207 70 grains and they are devastaing on pigs , donkeys, scrubbers, also work on buff. Make a great noise on pigs.
Im trying the 400 hydros at the moment. Hope to test them on buff soon. Mick

I love my 458

Off a rest it's a moa rifle.
Yours likely is too.
I shoot the Hornady 350snrn at similar velocities as you're running the 405

I've also shot the long Barnes 350 spitzer copper TSX bullets seated long for big powder room (Lott charges) at over 2700fps, I forget the actual numbers, but they're ultra rippers.

Have fun with that thing!
Nice dogs too...

Cheers

No,458 is new for me.
DarylS was just telling me how good the 350 grain Hornadys were.

Do you know what MV you are getting out of them ?.

Mine will feed the Hydro's I'm sure but doubt I will ever hunt properly with it as in Buff or scrub cattle as I will just use my 404 or 9.3's.

Cheers Neale.

Another vote for the 350's hey ?.

350 grain TSX @ 2700 would sort most things I would think.

Neale, my mate shot the chrony before I could test them. So never got around to it. They were very accurate for a big gun. So i tried them on game and havnt looked back. Probably around 2400-2500fps. Hornady data. No pressure signs.
Prior to the .458 I ran a 45/70 Ruger #1 with them at approx 2150fps. Shot heaps of camels donkeys horses and buff with the hornady 350, worked well. Ran this set up and 500 grain loads as a back up gun until a mate gave me a Mark X .458.
I still have a good quantity of them so ill stick with them for a while. Mick

Good to know Mick,thanks.

I think if I were to go "up North" with it I would load the 480 grain Woodliegh RN as a alrounder.

G'Day Fella's,

Fat Boy 404,looks like you have been having some good sport!

The .458 is too much gun for me!
To many spinal injuries!!!

Any idea what "Sweet Nothings", the dogs might be whispering in the Pigs ears?

Doh!

Great stuff !

I see you have plenty of "protection" for that front holder while he is doing the whispering

Can't get him to hold from the side eh ?

He does on his own.
He tries to take the pig away from George.

The trouble is he has hunted with a breastplate all his life so he hasn't learnt to many "tuff lessons" and doesn't have any respect for the "pointy end".

Because he is so little I have wrapped him in cotton wool. Most of my dogs learn the bussiness without a plate like "George" in the photo.
