J.P Smithson 416 rem mag Left-hand
      #199477 - 15/01/12 08:15 AM

Hello from Norway everyone!

I too dream to see the elephant, and smell the smoke of africa! Thus I need a tool for the job! This is a bit further down the pipeline, yet I would like to buy a rifle quite a bit in advance and get to know it, its shooting characteristics etc.

Now, I AM on a budget. Additionally, Im left-handed. So the selection of available left-hand rifles are close to zero...
Here in Norway the amount of rifles found in scandinavia and germany/france combined is in the two digits, whereas you would be lucky to find a single left-handed weapon..so I am forced to look the the US.
At the gunsinternational site I found one within my budget who seems decent.

http://www.gunsinternational.com/J-P-Smi...un_id=100218962

Caliber seems adequate, left-hand, nice bolt-action... however, Im not familiar with the "This rifle was built on a Harris Gunworks action".
Seeing as the weapon is quite alot cheaper than other smithson rifles, is this a inferior action? Or is this rifle simply "modified" a bit by smithson?

I would still need it exported from the U.S to Norway with a 24% import tax and some export taxes probably in the region of 500-800 dollars, hence my budget...

Thanks in advance for any advice and reflections on this rifle!

Regards,
Axel Nikolai

Norway

Just a guess, but it is probably cheaper because it is left handed and hasn't sold as quickly as the owner would like.

Info on Harris Gun Works should be here somewhere.

I did google it and found some information, as far as I found out, smithson rifles are usually built on a granite arms action? So how does this differ. Also, do you have any experience with the smithson rifles tophet1? How do they compare. Regards!

Fontainbleu,
Harris Gunworks just builds barrels I beleive. Smithson does have a web site, I'm sure if you contacted them they might give you info on the rifle in question. As a fellow southpaw I understand the problem in finding what you want. Not sure of how gun buying works in Norway but Cz and Ruger both make left bolt rifles in dangerous game calibers. chuckT.

Hey chuck and thanks for the reply!I did send smithson a mail, awaiting reply. If Harris Gunworks only build barrels, how come it says "the rifle is built on a harris gunworks ACTION?".
Cz and Ruger are also up for consideration, thanks!

Is JP Smithson the same as Joe Smithson?

Joe Smithson rifles are excellent quality.

Here is the Smithson website:

Maybe he can answer the action question.

A quick scan through some of those links seems to indicate that Harris Gun works has changed hands and names and been in some trouble.

eg: http://yarchive.net/gun/politics/mcmillan_family.html

Scoll down and read the second email. It looks like if it is a pre-late 1991 action it is a better one than what may have been produced later.

If the rifle was built by Smithson and you believe what you hear about him (I've only heard the positive promo on the 'Death By ...' DVD's) then I doubt he would have used a dodgey action, if the promo was correct.

I am not familiar with the rifles at all.

Fountainebleu, Sometimes the descriptions on the gun auction site aren't always accurate on the details, particularly with custom guns. Good luck in your search. chuckT.

One more point. Smithson rifles are among the top quality custom rifles made in the US. They are far superior to Dakota, etc.

Nice.. Im still on the fence regarding the whole Double rifle vs bolt-action issue.
I already have a few bolt rifles, so a double would be fun. Then again, aside from a lion charging you, I struggle to see the advantages...

A double is nice if you are going to shoot elephants from less than 10 yards.

Virtually no chance of a malfunction on followup shot. But, most hunters who own a double also own a bolt-action. They serve different missions. I carried a bolt and double on my recent plains game hunt and used both as the shot required.

Regarding that rifle, and also a lefty, I could see it as a one gun solution.

You see no need for a double rifle with this one on the shelf?

If you plan to intentionally approach elephants inside of 10 yards, I like a double.

Otherwise they are nice, but not a necessity. But consider that inside of 10 yards during a charge, a bolt gun is essentially a single shot.

Oh well. I cant really see myself hunting elephants ( they seem to intelligent for me to stomach it) nor lions really.

The rifle is built on a "Talon" action, which is pretty much a model 70 with a few Remington 700 features.

The rifles I have owned labelled "G. McMillan Gunworks" shot and worked fine, those from Harris Gunworks era - was not making me happy. Signature and Talon were nice rifles for the price. Today, Gale McMillan sons are making the McBros rifles - very nice rifles.

To make along story short - I hope I have gotten this right. It started out as McMillan Gunworks, then Gale McMillan involved some other people and latter on he left the company for reason I don't know of. Company changed owners and new investors entered, named changed to Harris Gunworks. Before the shutters went down and the production of rifles ended I think it was named Wes Harris Gunworks.

Finding spare parts for these rifles is difficult unless got a smith that can make "one off" parts.
