Martini Action / Caliber ?

Gentlemen,
I've had a large Martini action languishing in the safe for years. Now in a position to do something with it. Any suggestions on an interesting caliber to shoot for, perhaps a short BPE round ? Also anyone familiar with a good gunsmith in my neck of the world with experience working on single shots? Thanks. chuckT.

I really like the 500/450No.1 and I think it isn't too long for a Martini action at all.

Later this year, I'll be building one, for a customer, on a large MH action and it will be in .450 No 2 Musket calibre.

Agree with the 450 Musket No. 2. I have a reamer and I will be sending my rifle later this spring out to John Taylor in Washington to rebarrel my sporter Martini in Musket No 2.

Is that the 3 1/8" magnum or the #2?

Mike, it's the #2. It's a fun gun to shoot. I just got it so I have to do some load development but I already had the components and dies from another rifle that I had.

I wondered Mike.. I don't think the 3 1/8" would make the corner into the chamber but I'm not sure.

On page 30 of “The Breech Loading Single Shot Target Rifle” by Col. Ned Roberts and Ken Waters there is a photo of two Martini rifles. One is a “Kill Deer” hunting rifle in 45-70, and the other is a “What Cheer” target rifle. If the action were mine I would build a replica of the “Kill Deer.” In fact, it is a long-held ambition that will one day be fulfilled.

This round would make a GREAT Martini - or #4 Enfield ctg. Left of Martini, right rebated rim for the bolt actioned rifle. .450 Alaskan and .458 Alaskan. Case capacity 98gr.
