Adolph Minar and Lee Speed in Alaska
      #199020 - 09/01/12 06:23 AM

Thought I'd share a couple photos of last year's balck bear hunt in interior Alaska

It is educational to hunt with old rifles and on this trip I alternated days carrying the 1930's vintage 30-06 1903 Spfld built by Adolph Minar and my 303 Lee Speed

Phil,
That is the first photo that I have ever seen of a Minar rifle. Jack O'Connor wrote about Mr. Minar's work on several occasions but never managed to publish a photo, at least as far as I know. Could you please post some more for our edification and entertainment?

That is lovely! I can see now why JOC considered Minar one of the best stockers of his day. These pieces are rare; it is probably easier to find a Linden or Owen piece than a Minar. I believe he died in the early 1930s....How does it shoot?

The rifle is still relatively pristine and it shoots like a 1903 Spfld --- great.
According to Michael Petrov Minar only built around 30 rifles. Jack O'Conner owned 2 - a Spfld bolt action and a single shot

here is another shot of the cheek piece

Love that Springfield - trapped butt plates are especially appealing. Had one in my first .458 2". I also appreciate seeing a nice long barrel.

Interesting, but not suprising, that you saw it in the UK. it seems to be liking it up here

That Springfield is truly beautiful; but not only that, it is pure function as well.

It reminds me of a Griffin & Howe Springfield Sporter I owned in the early 1980's, though my G&H was scoped. Yours has much more grace with the receiver sight.

Thanks for sharing that beauty.

Beautiful rifles! It is most heartening to see them being hunted with in a beautiful place like Alaska!

Thanks for sharing and good hunting!
