Shotgun to Double Rifle
      #198890 - 07/01/12 06:41 PM

Sirs, I'm new here so please bear with me. I'm looking for information regarding a shotgun to double rifle conversion. I've found someone here in my home state who does the conversions, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it. I can't find much in the way of resources or information pertaining to it and am hoping someone here can point me in a semi-educational direction.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. I don't have the money to buy anything yet so this is the next best thing!! Even a Sabatti or a Bailey Bradshaw rifle is too much right now!! This process is much cheaper and is pretty good as far as functionability from what I hear. If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate it!!

Thanks!!

Welcome to the site!

There's a book titled something to the effect of "Building double rifles on shotgun actions". Google it.

Also use the search feature here and look around the gunbuilding threads here on NitroExpress.

There's lots of good info here.

Cheers

W. Ellis Brown's book, "Building Double Rifles on Shotgun Actions" is a good source of info as far as the build. Having someone do the work for you can add another level of complexity.

I just got home tonight from Dallas Safari Club . I had a great time looking at the exhibits and visiting with the exhibitors , but the clear highlight of my day was meeting Mr. W. Ellis Brown . I can say without reservation that you will never meet a nicer , more down to earth , humble man than Mr. Brown . He is a true gentleman in every sense of the word .

By all means buy this book .

Myself , Mr. Brown , and my signed copy of "Building Double Rifles on Shotgun Actions"

Try sending a pm to Birdhunter50 here at NE and see if he's interested in doing this project. He's got experience at it already.
Ellis Brown also does some still. I recently held one of his creations.. And it was in a 450 NE!

Mr Brown is finishing up a set of shoe lump 25-20 barrels to fit my son's 410 SxS. I can't wait to try it in a few weeks and will post some pictures.

To say he's been a pleasure to work with is an understatement! I'm jaded enough to automatically multiply any gunsmithing time estimate by 3. I once waited 23 months for what was quoted as a 2 month job by a big name in the lever gun business (think 50AK). Ellis has been both prompt and also curtious enough to email progress reports (with pictures!) several times a week. I'm impressed with the work and watching it all come together has been wonderful.

Mr. Brown

I was at the show for a short time.
Had I known you were there I would have looked you up.
I would like to get a copy of your book and meet you.
Will you be at SCI ?

Nitro,
I was at the DSC convention due to a joint project with a ACGG guild member - a .470. I will not be at SCI (barely got to DSC and back). As you know, the book can be obtained through the Bunduki Publishing web site. Requests for a signed copy come to me and I ship them out directly.

I love meeting with people who have an interest in double rifles, and not just customers. If you are ever in the Ft.Collins, CO. area, look me up and visit the shop.

You guys have it correct, W. Ellis Brown is, indeed, one hell of a nice well meaning guy, and knows what he is talking about. I took a class from him in gunsmithing school, Tech College, MN, converting shotguns to double rifles, prior to his writing his book on same subject, now in 2nd edition. I strongly recommend his book, if you have interests in this sort of subject. Also, if you have interests in trying to re-regulate a double rifle, the process is clearly explained in this book too. I have converted several shotguns to double rifles now, without a problem, so I know the process works well, if you can do the work nicessary.

"Welcome , Mr. Brown , to NitroExpress.com"

Thanks for the welcome. I have followed this forum and a couple of others for sometime, but just avoided doing much posting. While talking to folks at DSC, I became convinced that I needed to put in a bit more presence on the forums. So, once again, thanks for the welcome.

Always something interesting out here.

A friend of mine has a 50 Alaskan made up on a AYA shotgun action.

I've hunted with it a few times, and taken a scrub bull, a handful of donkeys and a few pigs with it
Regulated for 440 gr Woodleigh, with 60 gr of 2208 (varget), a low pressure load that only does 1700 fps, but works well in the bush..

Cheers

I have Ellis's book and can't recommend it enough. Ellis shows not only his successes but also shares his failures which is so important to any aspiring double gunsmith because it is not all smooth sailing. But as I learned while welding the difference between a good weld and a bad one is often just a pass away. One must endeavor to persevere. Glad your here Mr. Brown. You will find of all the forums the gentlemen end up here.

Ellis,

Let me add my warm welcome to these forums. I'm glad you have decided to join in the discussions.

You won't find anyone here who is more enthusiastic about double rifles than I.

I look forward to reading what you have to say.

I don't have any modern doubles, but I am MORE entusiastic about double rifles than Curl is. He's actually a bit lame in regards 'double rifles' - yup - actually.

Yeah Curl is a real braggadocio, but has a right with the many varied toys he has in the woodshed, not just doubles.

Daryl and Tinker,

I'm sitting here chuckling. My wife always wonders how I can sit and laugh in front of my laptop. She doesn't do discussion boards.

Trouble is, I can't even think of a good comeback.

I suppose I could say that Daryl isn't enthusiastic about traditional muzzle loading rifles. And maybe Tinker just doesn't care much about 16 bore double rifles. Just doesn't seem quite as amusing.

Cheers,
Curl
