ACCURACY RESULTS! 35 Whelen is a monster!
      #19878 - 20/10/04 03:28 PM

the Mauser 98 sporter in 35 Whelen I bought off Mike Dodd for all of $500, has lived up to its billing.

the bloody thing is a tack-driver. its shooting .179" and .248" groups (on a .358" bullet diameter) and is very manageable.

those groups are both with 250gr rounds at 2400, and while I am sure that one could get more out of the rifle, not much will stand in your way short of a buff or jumbo.

I'm VERY VERY pleased, and while the gun does still have some "quirks" (less than buttery-smooth action), for the money and the accuracy, I'm VERY pleased with my purchase.

I've heard the stories of the whitetails there around Lincoln and I know that .35 Whelen will be needed badly next year.

The thickness of the armor they grow is less as you go west!!!

Sounds like you have a winner! Are you shooting spire points or round nose 258s? I am particularly fond of the 250 grain round nose bullets. They have literally been the hammer of thor on black bears & whitetails here in PA for me I have never had them drop faster .........quite literally in their tracks

I hope to have my LH mauser finished by February. It will join my Remington 7600 pump action 35 whelen I picked up a reloader for Christmas & will be loading some 250 grain round noses for it. I also plan on trying the 225 grain Nosler ballistic tips & 250 grain partitions.

Good luck with your Whelen It is by far my favorite hunting caliber.

IronBuck,
I have to agree.
I've killed a fair amount of Ozzie game with my 400-350 double and 250 grain Hornady RN 358's and they do kill real well.

Now THAT sounds like my kind of double I'd love to have something like that for bear hunting here in PA. Someday I'll take the plunge and invest in a double rifle. Until then I'll just dream about them But my whelens will keep on rolling in the mean time.
