First few deer of the year
      #19760 - 14/10/04 07:41 PM

Bow season started around here 2 short weeks ago. So far I have managed to take a few does for meat & a nice 9 point buck. I hunt several Eastern states so My season will go on from now through mid January. How is everyone else doing?

Well done.

All our local deer, those of the European species anyway and of any size, have cast their antlers by now. Some small jokers still getting around. But a German acquaintance has asked me to take him out during his holiday here and we will see if we can find a sambar or rusa stag of some size next week. Hopefully some success too.

nitrox,

Do you guys have hunting for Rusa deer in Australia? I don't know why but I have alaways wanted to take one of those. they are such a pretty deer. Is it expensive to do. Are they available to nonresidents?

Rusa can be found in several places in Aust. The main herd is South West of Sydney near or in the Royal National Park. They suffered (reportedly) heavily in a recent bushfire and periodically the NSW gov't thinks about shooting them out. These are Javan Rusa.

Mollucan rusa can be found on Groote Eylandt in the NT but I am not sure if they are huntable.

Probably various other locations.

The place I am going is a very large fenced property in South Australia which has several species of deer. The hunter I am taking there just wants to do a hunt while here and why not?

The BEST place for large exceptional trophy Rusa deer is New Calendonia. A great place for a great Rusa hunt. Plus a tropical paradise and a fantastic location to take the wife or girlfriend too. This is a place I WILL hunt before long.

I can recommend a very good outfitter to you if you are interested. Send me a PM or email if you are interested.

The prices for a Rusa hunt are very reasonable.
