Is 9.3 big enough for ...
      #196896 - 16/12/11 12:18 PM

Pocket gopher . I say it is . This big boar gopher fell to the first shot I fired in my new 9.3x74r double rifle . Admittedly , this shot went thru the softer side skull instead of the thicker and harder frontal skull plate but I dont think it would have mattered and that if he had indeed committed to the charge that he was contemplating , I am confident a frontal brain shot would have stopped him .

I had been trying to take this beast for some time when I was presented with the chance to try out my new rifle and I must say performance was outstanding , the only negative was that I had hoped to have him measured by Rowland Ward but ..... well you can see thats not gonna happen .

At least you did it right and actually took the head off.

Had a quail land in front of us when spotlighting, told the bloke to shoot it, he queried it, I said just take it's head off.

He promptly forgot about scope height above the barrel at close range and blew the living daylights out of it.

Well done, great use for a DR ! LOL

Brilliant performance! You handled a very dangerous situation well.

Nice trophy also.

Very nice shooting, photos, and write up of your hunt. I hope to one day, when I grow up, have a chance to hunt for a big boar gopher just like this. It will be a dream come true. In the mean time, I went ahead and purchased my 9.3X74R in a Chapuis UGEX, so the dream is not so distant after all!

Having gone through the softer side of the skull, did you recover the projectile from the off-side and what were the mushrooming characteristics, if any, of the projectile; or were you using a solid?

Kind regards,

Right barrel with 286 grain Hornady soft point .

It was so much fun !
A few days later I took this one with the same load in the left barrel .

Soft points worked well but what about solids ?
293 grain RWS nickel plated steel jackets were the demise of these two

ruffcountry,

You are a funny guy.

Now if you can shoot those critters with it, you shouldn't have a lot of trouble finding a brain sized target on something bigger.

There is a method to my madness , just trying to get more familar with a type of rifle I'm not used to shooting . I hope to have many chances at larger critters . I have already taken a deer with it and I will try for Nilgai next month .

If you keep doing it like this you'll never get a decent cape for a mount with these critters!
Try a Texas Heart Shot next time!

You sure do like living dangerously. taking so many chances with extremly dangerous game and a marginal calibre.

Ruffcounrty that is not a bad way to learn about your rifle. When I started out with a 30-30 I shot hundereds of rabbits with it. You do become very proficent that way.

Had the same situation a while back here. We were driving in the bush when we came upon some aggresive meerkats (ground squirrel). Fortunately we saw them first, and I had some time to choose between my 375 and my 303, both fitted with iron sights. Because it was a longish shot at about 90 yards and the fact that the 303 was loaded with 180gr bullets I decided on it. Well, the first meerkat fell with a proper hart/lung shot. The rest charged us and we had to make a hasty retreat. We just had the time to get into the vehicle and sped off. HA-HA.

The headshots are impressive. You should be able to do a life-size mount on the one shot with the solid...

And, it was all done with on of those horrible Sabatti double rifles too, that so many people hate, poorly regulated, often oval muzzle ground, inaccurate, made in Turkey, using soft steel, or so some internet "experts" have said, and expect all to believe. This seems to show that these "experts" may be a bit wrong on at least some of their assumptions!
