30-Point Illinois Deer is a Doe
      #196656 - 14/12/11 04:56 AM

Crazy Story..

Ripp

The deer hand no male genetalia and was estimated to be about four or five years old. While antlered does are not unheard of, they are rare and they hardly ever grow racks of this size. As of now, the deer has not yet been scored.

As you can see from the photo it has a crazy freak rack with a droptine that is still in velvet. An Illinois farmer was the lucky hunter who took this freak deer.

If this isn't strange enough, this antlered doe is the second 30-pointer to make news in Illinois. Earlier this season Travis Cockburn took an incredible 30-pointer with his bow that could be the new state record.

Interesting, the story doesn't say it has female genetalia either, but must have something.

or used to have nuts.

I thought if you cut the nuts off some animals it can make them grow large antlers / horns ?

I think Buffalo may be one.

Any idea with deer ?

Lester H. Hawkes, past friend of mine, originally of Kalispel area told me they had a pet bull elk over on the Tbar3 Dude ranch.
The elk got to hooking the cows one fall, so they roped and tied him down, then steer'd him along with the calves the next spring at roundup. After that, Les said 'Old Ben' never went out of Velvet - & he had a wondeful rack.

Les had a picture of Slim Pickin's riding Old Ben at the Kalispell fall fair one year. As most of you older chaps know, Slim, wasn't very slim, yet Old Ben had no trouble with Sim on his back, he just didn't look very big and of course, lost his majesty. Sure looked funny with the halter and saddle, not to mention Slim astride his back.

From what I have seen in the wild-if the nuts are gone===they stay in the "stag" way for life..as Darryl's story suggests as well--have only come across them twice in all my years afield...but each time they were in velvet--even in the dead of winter..

Will they shed their antlers like "regular" bucks?
