Dieter Herbert has a lot to be thankful for.
The 18-year-old Long Island, N.Y., native shot his first black bear over Thanksgiving weekend – and the big bruiser could very well be the biggest taken in New York.
The big bear, shot in Greene County, N.Y., with a Remington Model 7 in .308, weighed 520 pounds gutted, placing the bear’s live weight over 600 pounds, with the skull measuring a rough 22 inches.
Not bad at all for his first bruin, and Herbert was happy to share the details with Petersen’s Hunting.

22" is a great Black Bear, for sure. They only reach that size in BC - over on the Queen Charlotte Islands, off the West coast.

Agree totally---the ones here in Montana--the really big ones are in the 19 range if you are lucky..with a few over --but quite rare for that..

I'd be quite leased with a 19" bear skull. Biggest normally around here are at or barely over 20" - 7 to 7' 10" (max that I've seen) squared. It was 21" (I think) green skull.
Isn't 20" needed on a B Bear for bear minumum for the Boone and Crocket?
Anything 6' or better is a pretty good bear. My best was 6'4" (old sow) - .458 in right side of mellon - zygomic (zygomatic?) arch gone off the left side, but she had a very narrow long face anyway.
yes - that 22"er is a good'n.

I hope that bear has passed his genes on over the past several years.

I am guessing with the normal amount of time it takes to get to that size..that old boy entertained many a sow through the years..
Wow--there are so many things I could say after that statement..but I had best leave that one alone..
