C. Lancaster in cal. 444 Marlin

I have seen a Lancaster DR / with sidelocks and single trigger, in caliber 444Marlin. The rifle was built about 1910 in caliber 370? and sometime in the sixties the caliber was changed for 444 Marlin.
It seems like the caliber change was made in England, it is nitro proofed.

Is there anyone that knows or have seen anything similar before? I'ts a very nice gun, but the caliber seems litle bit strange for English DR.

Sven, I ordered an AYA No.1 in 20 bore 3 years ago and they did offer an option of a spare pair of barrels in .44 Rem mag, made and regulated in Belgium, I did think about it as I thought it would make a great little driven boar rifle (as would a .444) but it would have cost me an extra GBP7k so I decided against it, I guess the chap who changed the rifle above was thinking the same. Also, though I maybe wrong here and stand to be corrected, that it is difficult if not impossible to get an FAC in the UK for a .375 for GAME shooting in the UK, I needed to show the police in the UK that I had my .500 on a European certificate before they would allow me to bring it through ONLY for transit to Africa !!, it could be that the previous owner had it rebored to .444 as the cartridge is at best I guess a 150 yd one with it´s trajectory, just a possibility that the police would have OKéd that, best, Mike

The Brits built double rifles in pistol calibers like the 455 and 476 and in levergun calibers like the 405 Winchester, so it would not be out of character to re-build an old double rifle in a modern levergun caliber.

A hell of a lot of English doubles were rechambered in the 60's and 70's to "other" calibres. A lot of 350's went to 9.3 74R and the odd 375 Fl Mag but many others as well.

I saw a lovely Farquharson re-chambered to 444 Marlin on a stand at Bisley a couple of years ago.

I have a H&H .303 that was re-bored to .35 WCF.

Well, it seems like there is a lot of re-bored DR out there!

Do you know what action your Lancaster is built on ?

Is it a Webley or even if in luck a "Wrist breaker" ?

It's a sidelock with single trigger and ejectors and what I understand it is the "wrist breaker" modell!

Is there anyone that could give me some help with adding some photos to the form?

I wish CHAMPLIN would put a photo of it in the case which I put together for it with accessories, it's a beauty and really makes the package IMHO.

If I could post photos, I would put one up myself.

Maybe the owner will post one as he is a member on here.

I have a James MacNaughton .360 2-1/4" case BPE Underlever re-bored to .38-55 long ago.
It had to be long ago due to the currently rotten bores.

38-55 long? I'm not familiar with that one. What's the ctg. length please and what case is used?

I think he means the Cartridge is "38-55" and the gun was
rebored "long ago", not that the cartridge is called "38-55 long".

No wonder foreigners have problems with the English language !!!

Cutting chambers and/or re-boring barrels for modern cartridges does tend to lower (at times substantially) the re-sale value of a vintage double rifle.
