A .318WR from C&H..
      #195662 - 04/12/11 01:24 AM

I picked this up and debating a refinish in my mind. The bore is very good, but as you can see the outside is rough. What say ya...

Maybe just a good cleaning.
For some reason, guns such as this one and my .333 Jeffery and my C&H typeA really appeal to me.
I just like a well worn and well cared for rifle as evidenced by the high bore condition. Just feel and look like guns that have earned their keep and were "go to guns" for all kinds of duty.
Anyway, the next guy can refinish it if he wants.

Those holes in recoil pad do not look so nice, maybe just change the pad and clean the whole rifle carefully.

Replacing the pad and judicious use of a cabinet scraper and steaming the dings out would make a world of difference. (BTW mask the chequering)

Definantly a new recoil pad. Well worth the effort and cost to refurb IMHO.

Deserves a re-finish or basic clean-up and a new pad.

Exactly.

A friend of mine recently gave his Cogswell & Harrison .318 a birthday. Had the engraving cleaned up, re rust blued, etc etc etc.

Now a great looking gun, but it's lost it's magic......

A lovely rifle and your plan to do a "character honest" restoration is a fantastic idea. Please do post pictures of what you do.

Congratulations, and thanks for sharing pictures!

Made that mistake with a couple of vintage Winchester & Marlin lever actions, and had Doug Turnbull do them. I do not think there is a more skilled restoration gunsmith in the U.S., but the rifles didn't have a soul when they were returned to as-new condition.

I have met and made the acquaintece of many fine guns , but I have yet to meet one 'with a soul' or that 'spoke to me' or had any 'magic' associated with it. Some have a 'history' and that history remains WHATEVER is done to it. A crummy looking gun is just that a crummy looking gun no matter who made or used it and every firearm deserves the best face one can put on it especially a nice old well used gun like this. I look forward to seeing how you restore it. I have a fondness for Cogswell & Harrisons as my first double was one of their 450/400's.

I tend to agree. I do not think of it as the gun "speaking" so much as wonder what tales the gun could tell if it spoke. All cleaned up and no character-dings, scratches, darkning of the timber etc-and the rifle does not start one thinking of its past.

Least ways thats how I look at it.

At this point,we will install a new pad,but antique it's finish and then repair the rear sight.Maybe I can push it for another hundred years of use...
