470 "Split" ammo
      #18856 - 03/09/04 06:53 PM

I was at the gunshop yesterday and they had some 5 round boxes of old Kynoch 470 ammo - most were the usual soft point but one box (which I bought for $A10) was labelled "Split" and proved to be softpoint ammo with a series of longitudinal split in the jacket from the start of the ogive to just short of the exposed lead tip.

Would I be right in thinking that these were like "lion loads" - designed to expand more rapidly than the usual softpoints? Does anyone have any history on these?

Hell mate I dont know about the split ammo however the price is right.
I would be inclined at $ 10-00 a box to buy any they had.
I am assuming they are 5 per box, grab them...

The 'Soft-nose Split' was basically one of the three standard options for Nitro-Express cartridges in the hey-day (the other two were soft-nose and solid). Much like today choosing between a FMJ, soft-point, and hollow-point. Yes, the splits were designed to promote rapid expansion. In a .470, they would be OK for lion, but in the ~.400 class of cartridge, which was looked upon as more of an 'all-rounder' in those days, the split bullets were for antelope and pot-shooting. This increased the versatility of a double nitro-express for the 'one-gun' hunter.

Soft-nose Split bullets are discussed pretty thoroughly in the texts of the day, most notably 'African Rifles and Cartridges' by John 'Pondoro' Taylor.

Thanks, I've read Taylor's book a couple of times but must have missed that. I'll look it up tonight.

OK, you guys convinced me - I went back and bought the other 5 packets. Also got 74 rounds of Kynoch 318WR (mix of SP and solids), boxer primed for $A70.

I stockpiled a lot of 470 Federal factory ammo and Bertram and Kynoch cases many years ago so i haven't bought any recently. What is the going rate for 100 470 FLs?

Not sure on the price of brass either as I also have lots from times past. The last box of Federal 470 I bought was US$115.00. It was a few years ago.

About the Bertram though. You would have to give it to me and pay the shipping to get rid of it.

What shop are you buying them from mike? I am just a couple of hours away and i pay alot more than that for ANY ammo over .308, really expensive for ammo at the Fyshwick gun shops.

This stuff was some left overs they had but the shop, Western Firearms at Narwee in Sydney is good for various odds and ends and esp reloading gear. Sometimes they have specials like 9.3x74R cases at $A100/100 (but not at the moment) although they have a
pedersoli double in this calibre. I have dealt with them for 25 years and they are a good bunck of blokes.
