A first for NE?
      #195055 - 28/11/11 05:59 AM

In our creek, one of the two monotreme`s pictured below.

And to our OS members both lay eggs...YES! And to further wonderment both suckle their young!

On the bank!

And a pair of Kooka`s for some more unique Oz.

Gryph

Top photos and well done to get so close to the Platypus.

It's not often you see them let alone get close enough to photograph them.

Keep them coming.

Yes,great photo's mate.

Where I fish at my Parents there is a nice secluded hole in which a couple platypus live.

They pop up and have a look then take off flat out only to come back for another look.

Yes seeing them is one thing, getting a pic is another of course...the real hard one is to get one on the bank which they rarely visit.

Very impressive photos mate. Seeing a Platypus is enough in itself but a photo is very special.

Not only getting a pic but getting a pic with it's head above the water and eyes showing and in focus, bloody good effort IMHO.

Nice photos, but tell me more about them please.

Why are they so hard to photograph? Is it because they are shy or is it that you just don't see them?

We had badgers at the ranch that I used to hunt, and you could find burrows and tracks, but in 9 years I only ever saw one, including on the nighttime game cameras, because you just never see them.

Platypus

1. They were rare for a while. Not many of them for years as they were killed (fur) or died off - Polution in rivers etc or caught in fishing nets and drum nets (everyone in Aust used to string nets across inland creeks or use Drum nets.) They usually drowned.
2. They are also Very shy and hard to see
3. If you do see them, it is often the plop from them getting into the water or diving.

So Gryph in his usual way managed to get a top photo of one in focus and on the surface.

Apart from odd looking, they are also venomous (the male is anyway) !!!

Yeah- way to go Gryph. Wonderful photography!! All of them.

Is that a standard Hedghog? I didn't know they were aquatic. A friend of my daughter's had one for a pet.

Great pic's all right !

A fair few Platypus in Tassie & some at the back of the shack I'm staying in
But very hard to get a photo with a lot of the Puss out of the water , stalking the banks has not helped me as yet !

A bit of confusion there Daryl , that is a Echidna (or Spiny Ant-eater) in the next photo , not a water animal but it reads a little like that , I think Gryph meant it is hard to see Platypus on the bank & that the Echidna was on the bank ?

Gryph

Great photos as always.

Had a kookaburra on a power line in the backyard last night. No camera in hand though.

Caught an echidna a few months back, released it again. Blitzen kept finding it for me for a few days. Have very rarely seen them over the decades. A handful of times. Usually the GSPs find them for me in the field.

Never seen a platypus in the wild before. Only in parks and reserves. Wonderful photo.

Nice shots!! We have plenty of platypus around here but I have never got a shoit of one but I normally have fly rod in hand when I see them. I am not that patient (to get wildlife photos) - well done!!

Very nice stuff! BTW there's more of them than many folk believe, even within 30km of the CBD here.
