Ha ha, the above was a joke while I scanned the photos from an album, pre digital days.

Lion, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania - for illustration only

Bubiana Scene - impala grazing on the wetlands

Zebra in the forest - Hwange - How well the zebra are camouflaged, how many are in the photo?

Zebra in Hwange

Zebra in Matapos

My Zebra mare taken in Bubiana

Blue Wildebeest, Matapos

Blue Wildebeest, Matapos

Water hole after "The Long Trek", Bubiana

Loading up the Wildebeest, Bubiana

Wildebeest is unloaded and checked for bullet holes, Bubiana

A spotted hyaena, photo taken at Viv Bristow's Game Park zoo near Harare. Africans say witches turn themselves into hyaena at night and can also turn themselves into smoke. This explains why the hyaena I shot at, returning by night on the track on Chipisi from Bubiana wasn't hurt! It was a witch, disguised as a hyaena and she turned herself into smoke so the bullet passed clean through her vitals!

View from the Sondelani Lodge over the Sondelani property.

A closer view of the oxbow lake and cape buffalo drinking from it.

Small tusked elephant in the game viewing are of Sondelani.

Warthog in Hwange.

My warthog trophy. Shot in Sondelani at dusk. Photo taken by flash at Chipisi homestead, but someone silly was holding a lit maglight which ruined the exposure.

Common Duiker, taken in the "Reserve" of Chipisi.

Impala drinking at waterhole, Western Hwange near Nantwich.

Impala Ram in Hwange.

My first Impala trophy, taken in the "Reserve" at Chipisi.

Christine with Wayne's Landcruiser, one cold morning before the days heat. Well she was probably cold.

Klipspringer in Matatpos.

Dassie or Rockrabbit, in the tree next to our banda at Chipisi Homestead.

View from the deck of the dam on the river at Chipisi Homestead. On the upper side of the dam is deep water, down river from the dam is what looks like mud, but is actually deep sludge over water, that also stops evaporation.

Walking back across the dam wall, Wayne points out the sludge to Christine and the fact there are hippo living in it somewhere. Chipisi's guest dining lodge is in the background.

The Halstead Farm Homestead is on the other side of the small hill.

Another view of Chipisi's guest dining lodge in the sunset. Pleasant facilities, which I did not use much as we hunted hard a lot.

Lovely flowering trees at Chipisi Homestead on the path from the kitchen to the dining lodge.

The original Chipisi homestead, pockmarked with bullet holes from the civil war in Rhodesia. Sad to see. However as Chipisi was claimed by "warvets" and the invasion reported by JAG around the 2000 to 2002 period, I imagine the whole property is now rather sad.

Wayne selecting leopard bait from impala culled by chopper at Chipisi. The game capture boma is in the background.

A typical scene at Chipisi on the way to look for the eland. Our trip was in October and it was very dry and very hot. The country was experiencing a severe drought. As might be noticed later, Victoria Falls were not up to its usual standard and it was much smaller than what I had seen in 1988. But the rains were only a short time away. As can be seen the countryside looks devastated. However by the time we left Zimbabwe five weeks later, the rains had started and what was brown, dry and hard, was now greening up.

Another bush scene at Chipisi.

Wayne offered to take me to where they had hung a leopard bait recently and leopard sign had been found. No spoor sighted this time. Here Wayne and Judea are returning to the homestead through wild tobacco plants.

Young kudu bulls, Hwange.

Herd of kudu drink at waterhole in Western Hwange, near Nantwich.

My kudu trophy, taken on Sondelani. Judea, Wayne's tracker shares the photo.

Eland bull in the Matapos Hills

Eland antelope feeds in the bush reserve of Viv Bristow's game park near Harare.

My eland bull trophy, taken on Chipisi. This scene and the eland bull always gives me a feeling of sadness and melancholy, however it was a great hunt taking this eland bull.

Bushpig at Bristow's Zoo near Harare. Bushpig was one of the animals I failed to score on. None were spotted at all, probably the wrong area for them, and also the drought had killed off a lot of warthog and bushpigs. One day I will make a trip specialising in bushpig and warthog.

Jackal at Bristow's Zoo near Harare. Saw some of these but no photos in the wild, nor shots taken.

Great photos, but that can't be John because the guy in the photos is too young and good looking.

The photos do bring back great memories. Got LOTS more still to post, scan, edit, and post.

The photos do help one remember the story. Wrote a few pages on the forums, then cut them to a word document because as I wrote I remember extra things, also some things were completely out of order. Maybe will need me to proof read as well first, from previous experience.

But written seventeen years after the event, one forgets things, the hot wind in the face, the smell of the dust, the birds calling, a lot of the small things which add to a good story.

Being my first safari, and the most exciting in a lot of ways, I remember more of this one, than a lot after.

Will continue to post, change the order of the photos, and add the story bit by bit.

Thanks for the comments.

Ha ha, unfortunately true, in those days I thought I was unfit, but walked 25 kms one day, in 40 deg C heat, with only nine mouthfuls of water. The PH had blisters and I didn't.

Different story today.

Staffan,

That is great almost at the same time only 2 or 3 months apart.

It was good you could visit Sten Cedergren, one of the legends.

I don't remember if you have posted photos before, but did you hunt as well?

I am going to look for pics. If it's ok with you I post it here. I was working for the Swedish hunting organisation at that time. My wife was in the board for a Swedish help organiation towards Zimbabve. (we had à busload with zimbabians visiting our wedding). Swedish hunting organisation and the Zimbabian had an exhange. My wife had to visit her organisation, and there we go. Me and Sten were out with an Italian client on a elephant hunt. The client shot an rather big male elephant. But Sten shot in the same moment, but the client was pleased. I shot a Kudu, that was a big moment for a Young Swede. 18 years ago we did in Sweden mostly hunt Moose and Roedeer. Nowdays Fallow Deer and Wild boar are common. It was a extraordinary experiance the meeting with Sten, I can recommend his book " A vagabond hunter". Maybe I can make à thread of that. We had a nice time, I would like to go back!!!

Good, but please start a new thread. I am nowhere near finished with the photos or stories. I took over 800 transparencies on that trip, made into a photo album of probably a hundred and fifty photos. Plus I still need to add the stories as well.

Staffan,

the following got lost from the above post due to a wireless interruption.

Christine and I first enjoyed a seven day hunting safari on three properties in the West Nicholson area South of Bulawayo.

Then a day tour of the Matapos Hills and National Park. Bulawayo for a quick look.

Drove over to the Great Zimbabwe ruins and Mutare (I think it was).

Back to Bulawayo. Flew to Vic Falls, Vic Falls, plus a cruise above the falls, the sunset cruise of course, plus a flight.

Then self drove to Hwange Park, stayed in the far West of the Park little visited by tourists, spent sometimes almost a whole day in a hide seeing no one else, but various game. Then a couple of other camps, including Main Camp. Hired a guy in advance to take us to "special places", was OK but not anything special we couldn't do ourselves. Amazingly met a couple from the Barossa whom I went to school with in Main Camp and shared a game drive.

Then flew to Kariba. Crossed over to Zambia and did a Canoe safari on the North Shore of the Zambezi opposite Mana Pools. Was only two of us, as a tourist group of nine cancelled.

Then back to Kariba and flew to Harare. Finished off in Harare.

I had previously been to Zimbabwe in 1988. But no hunting.

It would have been quite an experience to accompany Sten Cedergren on a hunt. And taking a kudu on a honeymoon has got to be a plus anywhere.

Maybe it's the nostalgic in me, but I find those older type of photos more enjoyable than newer, sharper, crisper digital stuff.

My plan for next year was to be over there again for my Fiftieth. But I don't think it will happen now unless I am very lucky. Hopefully a visit to the NT instead which would also be grand.

Reminder to myself! A year ago. My printer/scanner is kaput. bought a new one a week ago and broke it or found it broken before finished unpacking. Back under warranty. Plastic rubbish they make these days.

I hope my old scanner still works with Windows 8. Forced obsolecense means many old printers and devices are purposefully not supported in Windows 8 or later s/w. Found two printers no longer work under Win 8 so will need to resurect an old PC to host them.

My old scanner worked very well for transparencies.
