Lion spotted in Darwin ? by 3 different car loads of people

Motorists spot lion near Darwin

AUTHORITIES in Darwin are on the lookout for a feral lioness, after three reports of a big cat being spotted crossing the Stuart Highway.

The sightings about 9pm (CST) last night sparked a quick police search and a check at Crocodylus, a local wildlife park just a few minutes from the scene.

According to the NT News, three cars pulled over while the animal crossed the highway in front of them at Pinelands, a small suburb about 20km from Darwin.

"I often get reports of dingoes in the area, which are a similar colour but a completely different size," said a spokeswoman for NT Police.

Police found no trace of the creature.

Chief scientist at Crocodylus, Charlie Manolis, said he took the sightings seriously, but both lions at the park were found to be secure.

He said that "not in a gazillion years" could a lion have escaped its enclosure and then voluntarily returned and been present when checked.

Mr Manolis said because three different people had reported seeing a lion, it was likely something was roaming around.

"Whether there is a large dog or a beastie out there that looks like a lion, we would like to find out any information about what it really is," he said.

Crocodylus is the only wildlife park in the Northern Territory that houses lions.

Anyone have any ideas ? If it was one person, you would think mmmmmmm, but 3 cars ?

Even a big Dingo doesn't or wouldn't look like a Lion IMHO.

A Yellow dog ?

A yellow Alsatian or something.

I'd like to know if it was seen at night, during the day and if the 3 car loads of people spoke to each other.

First a monkey... now a lion

NIGEL ADLAM | November 7th, 2011

A COUPLE has reported seeing a lion strolling across the Stuart Highway.

And they were sober.

Three carloads of people reportedly witnessed the event.

Did you see it?

The sighting comes after a bus driver and several passengers reported seeing a monkey cross the road in Darwin in 2010.

Senior Sergeant Greg Pusterla said the lion was allegedly seen crossing the main road at Pinelands just south of Darwin.
Your Say

"3 car loads of people, a bus driver and passengers and not one of them had a camera phone, gee what are the odds? The Lion scored well."
Darwinite

Police looked for the big cat without success.

"We investigate everything," Snr Sgt Pusterla said.

The only place where lions are kept in the Territory is Crocodylus Park.

"They checked on their lions and they were all where they were supposed to be," Snr Sgt Pusterla said.

The lion sighting took place about 9.20pm on Sunday.

Just imagine the media furore if a sporting hunter actually shot a lion in these circumstances. He or she could expect to be crucified. One would want to have a "life saving" story ready packaged up for the media, no doubt.

If it was a Lion, they would probably be more used to Cows than Buffalo having seen how Buffalo deal with anything that attacks them like Dogs.

They didn't kick up too much a stink over the Pygmy Hippo !!!

In any case, of course it charged

1st Darwin, now UK, everyone is seeing Lions at the moment. [Re: NitroX]
      #193315 - 08/11/11 11:20 AM

It seems everyone is seeing Lions at the moment.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/new...ilway-line.html

AMAZED train passengers were told they couldn't get off yesterday — because an escaped LION had been spotted near a railway line.

A police helicopter was scrambled after cops received two calls claiming the beast and its cub were on the prowl in Shepley, West Yorks.

Officers alerted transport bosses who immediately stopped commuters using the local station.

But normal service was resumed after an unsuccessful two-hour search involving 12 cops. Insp Carlton Young, of West Yorks Police, said: "We've had nothing confirmed and we've not located anyone who is claiming to have lost an animal."

He added that the force was treating the calls as genuine and that inquiries were continuing.

In May, police investigating claims of a tiger in a Southampton field found a dumped giant cuddly toy.

It mentions Pinelands, which I didn't recognise at first so looked it up on a map, even though I drive past / through it every year.

It seems to be where the new tiger Brennon drive intersects with the Stuart Highway, just on the Darwin side of Palmerston.

So plenty of houses / people living around there - and plenty of drunks to feast on if they get hungry !!! (Palmerston bus / coach stop for a start !!! LOL).

Probably more like the Australian version of

"The Goat and the Darkness".

Hell one would want it to be in the dark to avoid witnesses I think.

BTW I've worked it out!

It is a lion and it is also an Australian beast.

Some kid has been playing with his chemistry set, a la, Jurassic Park and recreated a Marsupial Lion.

Look at the evidence:

The Marsupial Lion is the largest meat-eating mammal known to have ever existed in Australia, and one of the largest marsupial carnivores from anywhere in the world (although see Thylacosmilus and Borhyaena). Individuals ranged up to around 75 cm (29.5 in) high at the shoulder and about 150 cm (60 in) from head to tail. Measurements taken from a number of specimens show that they averaged 100 to 130 kg (220 to 285 lb) in weight although individuals heavier than 160 kg (350 lb) may not have been uncommon.[2] This would make it quite comparable to female lions and tigers in general size.

Behaviour

The Marsupial Lion's limb proportions and muscle mass distribution indicate that, although it was a powerful animal, it was not a particularly fast runner. Palaeontologists conjecture that it was an ambush predator, either sneaking up and then leaping upon its prey, or dropping down on it from overhanging tree branches.
(Note: similar to drop bears.)

BTW I believe this guy was driving one of the vehicles with a tourist couple when the lion was spotted ->

I've often commented that Lions would look good walking across the flood plains up there.

I had forgotten about the Marsupial Lion that used to live here.

I love the way the mdeia says 3 car lods of people and then says all were sober !!! Yet not one photo.

Anyway, Long-grassers, you have been warned !!! LOL
(Although I doubt they read the NT News )
