.700/ .577 Nitro-Express

Westley Richards appears to be introducing or "sounding out" a new cartridge. The .700/.577 Nitro Express. Per their web site (see link below) the cartridge will be loaded with a 900 gr Soft nose or solid and be driven at 2,300 feet per second for muzzle energy of 10, 280 ft lbs. Velocity is obtained from a 26" barrel.

The case is rimmed and as such it is anticipated that WR may be loading this round in a new double rifle.

Now that will be a powerhouse in a double.

This is an excellent cartridge to talk about, but must not be a lot of fun to shoot.

WR designed it and built a rifle at the request of an Arab gentleman.

Any idea what the Arab gentleman intends to hunt?

I called WR to ask them about this cartridge a year or 2 ago. The person I spoke with said they had built 1 of these rifles for an Arab gentleman who basically wanted it to show to his friends. The WR employee seriously doubted whether the owner of the rifle would ever fire it.

500 grains,

Have you noticed that Saeed seems no have zero interest in double rifles or English style classic style bolt actions and similar. Obvioulsly he can afford the stuff with his pocket change.

Although I think he does have a 244 H&H bolt gun.

Mike

I think Saeed is a speed freak, ie speed as in bullet velocity.

He seems to be a small bore person at heart. I think I have read a few times where he has said if not for legal reasons he would happily use the 30/404s for everything.

If he has an H&H double in .244, it could very well cost more than the entire collections of us ordinary gun owners.

Richard.

To get the recoil down to 100 ftlbs, a .700/.577 double would have to weigh in the vicinity of 24 lbs.

Does it come with a carriage?

I think I'm going to get another wildcat built off of the 700NE case. A 6.5mm/700NE. It should shoot a 120gr bullet at slightly over 9700 fps. It would only drop 3 inches at 1000 yards. Think of all the dead gophers. The plus is that I'd have the only double varmint gun in the east.

Hey if the 577/700 makes sense, so does this, I'll call it the super dupper flat shooting 6.5 wacko.

I could even put a muzzle brake on it.

PS. Some people have more money then brains. I wish I did.

Even with the yet-to-be-invented slowest-burning powder on earth, the 6.5 Wacko would still require a 48-inch barrel!

Imagine the double!!

Hello all,
I have seen and handled this rifle one month ago, when I visited the facility in Birmingham. Ken Hulbert was so kind to give me a facility tour. It is still in the white but they have just recently added side plates to the rifle because the owner would like to have more space for engraving. I do not like a drop look with side plates! For some reason the work on this rifle stoped for some time - at least a year. I got the feeling that the original buyer lost the interest and now somebody else jumped in.
Nevertheless this rifle is much too heavy to carry all day - and I doubt that any elefant will realise the difference between a regular .577 N.E. and this canon which weight 19#.
best regards
Robert
