Winchester Model 70 .375H&H sight question/problem
      #19279 - 18/09/04 07:59 AM

A friend of mine bought a .375 H&H Model 70 new about a month ago and shot about a box of shells through it. He didn't think the sights were set right, so he brought it over today and we shot it on paper.

By the way this was my first time shooting a rifle this big, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

At any rate, it was shooting about 10 inches low at 25 yards. We moved the rear sight as far as it would go and it was still shooting about 7 inches low at 25 yards.

We shot a full box of shells out of it... Any suggestions on fixing this? Is this a factory problem? Has anyone else had this problem?

A stupid question: Is the sight picture on the express sights supposed to line up the same way as the sight picture on a regular gun?

I can't see why not, but to even get the sights to line up the way they are supposed to you have to really dig your cheek into the stock, or slide you head further toward the rear of the stock.

He is going bear hunting in Ontario (left today) and luckily he has a backup gun, but is very dissapointed that he will not be able to use his new gun.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

NitroSteel

I have a .375H&H "Classis Safari Express" and the rifle stock is designed for scope use thats why the sights are so hard to use. What I did was order a 1 standing 2 folding Express sight on a island base fron NECG the same as used on the Custom Winchesters and front sight to go with it.I now can use Express sights or scope with QD mounts

Simple fix...What you need is a lower front sight, you can get front sights in about any height...A lower front sight will move your point of impact UP...Talk to your gunsmith or just tell NECG or someone that the gun is shooting 7 inches low..and they will give you the correct front sight.

Is it not customary for a rifle that leaves the factory with iron sights to be sighted in?

Not really, they are sorta bore sighted, sometimes you get this great target in the box, just try and duplicate it sometime!!

Truth be that everyones eyes are different, everyone holds a gun different and this can cause some variation in group placement and a inch at 100 is 2"s at 200 and 3" at 300 and so on, then add your personal wiggle and wobble to this difference and everything goes to hell in a handbasket!

Hunt375,
Any DG rifle should have a set of iron sights that are sighted in for 100 yards..You didn't solve the problem you circumvented it...Its very easy to sight in a set of irons, just like it is to sight in a scope....A scope up close and personal with a closing buffalo, lion or elephant is a pretty good receipt for disaster IMO....
