MY current favorite hunting knife
      #192731 - 29/10/11 07:02 AM

http://www.eka-knivar.se/en/products/2/hunting/

A Swedish brand that makes all sorts of knives, including this "swingblade".

I bought one with a yellow handle for me, and one with an orange handle for my wife. Just so we know who's knife is who's. The bright handle colors make them easy to find in the undergrowth when you have to put it down for a minute while gutting an animal. Not to mention if a pile of guts or intestines cover it, as I know several guys who have had a hard time finding their knives in such situations when it's getting dark in the late afternoon.

The quality of the knife seems to be high, yet is decently priced compared to similar products. The gutting blade also works like it should, with virtually no chance of nicking the gut open. So far I've gutted a half a dozen moose with it, and haven't had a single complaint.

The scabbard is the one weak point IMO, as it seems a little flimsy. But no problems so far, so it might work out fine. Time will tell.

It might not be a beautiful handcrafted collectors item, but as a hunting tool, it's great. I've come to appreciate synthetic handle materials for knives like these that get covered in blood and guts.

Erik:

That looks like a good one. I have an EKA green rubber handled locking folder w/o the gutting blade I like a lot.

I mostly carry what I make, and here's a recent one based on an old favorite pattern I designed with the addition of a guard.

I like it alot as it gives me enough heft for clearing brush and such and when I'm travelling light checking snares I'll carry it. Usually I carry a small knife and heavier parang type knife for snare set building or carcass quartering, etc. I enjoy making knives and have been posting quite a bit on a different forum, even a "How-To" thread.

I must scold you tho...

Leaving your tollekniv heritage...shame on you.

PS: Just checked out the site; I have a "Swede 92" in dark green {not shown}. It was given to me by a salesmen at Ralph Martindale, Ltd {Brit matchets and such} some years ago. Great knife.

Funny story...

I lost this knife and missed it for a over a year, then.........

Found it, way up on the mountain, along the fenceline of my ranch. How the devil I lost it I don't recall, but finding it was a joy.

Now...if I could only find my Marble's Woodcraft the kids got me for Father's Day years ago...

ErikD I have one of those swing blades and there is nothing quicker or easier to use for running up the inside legs of big game type animals, simply brilliant!

One of these with the orange handles is my Christmas present from the wife this year. It was tough to locate the Swedish-made EKA in the U.S., though there seems to be lots of Chinese-made versions around.

I carry a Marble's Woodcraft, and a drop-point Loveless designed Marble's Sport 99 before that. I honestly haven't been happy with the blade on either of them and usually end up pulling out my Boker folder (which takes and holds an edge better than anything else I've ever owned).

Based on ErikD's comments and some additional reviews I've seen, I'm hopeful about this EKA.

Erik, what type of steel did they use? Does it hold an edge well, and is it easy to resharpen?

The steel on the EKA is Sandvik 12C27. I can't comment on how it holds an edge or re-sharpens since mine just arrived arrived today, but reviews on this steel that I could find were very favorable.

The version of this knife marketed by U.S.-based Outdoor Edge is made with a different steel (AUS-6 or AUS-8 I think).
