New Westley Richards 470NE?
      #192643 - 27/10/11 10:29 PM

Hi
I posted a couple of weeks ago about availability of used English doubles in Australia. I got some good replies/responses which made me think a bit further. I also started thinking about new DRs and Westley Richards always receives favorable comments on this site.

A new 470 boxlock is approx £30,000 and by the time I added insured postage and Australian duty it would end up being about £35,000. Only a few years ago that would convert to about $85,000 Australian dollars however at current exchange rates it is about $55,000 Australian dollars - a big difference.

I would appreciate any comments comparing that price to what I may have to pay for a used roughly equivalent gun. Hopefully my assumptions and calculations hang together.

Regards
Rick

The AUD is on a roll. This opportunity might not be seen again for decades. Go for it!

Question for you.

Do you mean a Boxlock or a Droplock. Just asking because of the WR in front of it.

You can probably pick up a used WR Boxlock Ejector for less than 55k that will handle everything you want to do in your life. That is unless you want a new WR one.

As for exchange rates, had to factor in because they change over time. Good DR's (good low end to high medium end, not the high end which are in a class of their own) can vary between 10 and 50k in the last 10 years.

The thing is, decide what you want first ie New or used, then decide on the money side.

If you want a new one and $55k is easily done by you, then buy it. Just be careful how you import it.

Yes aud is good and could even get better!!

The WR website talks about droplocks, boxlocks, and sidelocks however when you get to the pricing page there is no boxlock but there is a fixed lock which I guessed was the same ?? It was the cheapest option and for a working gun I reckon it is all I need as it is still a lot of money. I may have to work an extra year before retirement to afford it !!

Yes, a fixed lock will be the Droplock.

I have one in 500 Nitro and a WR Droplock 12 Gauge that used to be a Explora.

I just picked up a Westley which is a bit of both.
A boxlock with a droplock bottom action cover plate.
I suppose it is a good feature to be able to blow sand, dirt or moisture out of the action as well as some servicability to the dogs and springs.

There is a nice 476 WR boxlock for sale at Fox Hill

No. The fixed lock is the boxlock. The droplock is the detachable lock. I think you meant to say boxlock above.
