If they ate it then OK, otherwise a contemptuous waste of a food and hide resource.

It's a funny, complex old world, eh. I'm uncomfortable about this, even though I understand they are a feral pest. It seems disrespectful. Yet I'm not so uncomfortable about the Port Lincoln Tuna Toss, even though it still isn't my cup of tea. Hypocritical of me, eh.

Yeah even if they are pests and were otherwise left to rot on the ground, still seems disrespectful.

Kamilaroi, I hope you are prepared to say the same thing to the NZ Dept of Conservation? After they have done a 1080 drop and poisoned hundreds or thousands of possums (not to mention Deer etc) and then leave them all in the bush, to rot!

Oh Good Heavens how wrong you are. Missing the point entirely.

This activity clearly represents a cultural expression of need to add value to the life cycle of the possum.

These are organisms whose primary value to this community is the nutrients their carcasses provide to the soil after past wasteful and unceremonious disposition occured.

This modern ritual expresses the deep connection this community has for the earth and all it provides. This ceremony reflects the celebration of life and the experience of the circle of birth, life and death experienced by all.

Watch the artful arc of the body as it loops its way around the partial circle its flight {and life} represents. Observe the abiding hope that springs forth in the faces of the observers. See the mixing of the races that this ceremony fosters and peace and joy it brings to all who understand its meaning.

Of course. 1080 doesn't discriminate. Same for here.

Strange, but what the Hell!
A little sport with a carcass never hurt, same as hurling a hog with a trebuchet.

Speaking of hogs, those are some great pigs hanging there!

Yes this seems to be a pastime that has taken on at a few hunting competitions now, and I suppose it is a different take on tossing the gumboot. It does sit a little uncomfortable with me but then as youngsters we hunted many a possum down with terriers and watched as they thrashed and tore the things screeching and screaming for 10 minutes or so until death came for them. Then this is just a natural occurrence in the wild when one animal kills another. I'm sure if this was performed in front of the crowd in the pictures they would have a horrified view of the proceedings.

Most adults and kids see plenty of possum road kill in NZ and these animals are usually not kept as pets so the general population are less enamored to them as they are to rabbits, pigs and of course little bambi. Most in the pictures are hardy country folk or come from the hunting fraternity and I'm sure my kids would willingly take part if there. It is just a little dis-quietening when it is portrayed in pictures.
