Halger 7mm Magnum Rifle
      #192463 - 25/10/11 10:51 AM

Hi there,

Can anyone shed some light on a rifle that I’ve just purchased, Halger 7mm Magnum?
I can't seem to find too much info about it except some ballistics, seems to be very rare.
Any info would be much appreciated

Cheers

There's a bit of info on the web about the 280 Halger (HV) Magnum round - not sure if this is one and the same as what you have.

What brand rifle is it?

Shamus, welcome to NitroExpress.
The 280 Halger rifles were built up by Halbe and Gerlich (Hal-Ger) between the wars.
I think there were fewer than 200 built up. I owned #120 for a while and my brother had #105 as well. The numbers on ours were engraved on the top of the action wall.
They used magnum length Mauser actions.
Word has it that the 280 Halger case is derived from the 280 Ross but I would have to measure both of them up to see for sure.
Please post some pictures if you can.

You'll need to link them from an image hosting site (eg "photobucket" is a free host site).

A real treasure! It would benefit from a sympathetic restoration. BTW I'd suggest you look at minimum 280 Rem mag loads in slow powders for starters then work backwards to those a bit faster. Of course proportional density of powder charge to volume is some guideline and here our Euro respondents might assist.

I have a box of the same ammunition. All with cracked necks too.
Your gun looks to be built to the standard Halger pattern with variations here and there. I will post some pictures of mine if I have any.
Do you plan on shooting the Halger?

Not only an interesting find concerning the rifle.

The Scope also shows a development of low mounting objective , today advertised by Leupold using the same idea.

I've got some 280 Ross and Halger dies so might have a wee play.

I think these cases have a higher copper composition than usual. Not sure if that has anything to do with the neck splits or if they split because they originally had a higher neck tension than normal because the bullets have no cannelure thus no crimp.
I can tell you that I sold my Halger for $4600 which looking back I feel was too low. I should have kept it really although it was quite heavy and impossibly long by today's standards. Long barrel, long action, long forend, and a long length of pull. Often wondered just who ordered it that way. Guy must have been 6'5"...

Yep it's one for the giants, cheers for the info.
I'm looking at selling it as I've found an original cased 416 Rigby in lovely condition but can't afford to keep both at the moment.
You don’t get many chances to get your hands on Rigby.

Can I hear an "AMEN"
IMO, the Halger is a very cool gun in its own right, but an original cased Rigby is a different matter altogether!

Like I said, I wish I had not sold mine but at the time I was getting into Brit guns and the Halger just didn't fit in with what I was wanting in the collection.
The buyer of my gun had some connection to some descendants of the Halbe and Gerlich concern so I was a bit pleased that it was going back home so to speak.

Hmmm the case certainly looks like the .280 Ross and if so it uses 0.287" bullets and not the commonly used today 0.284".

Wasn't it Halger who offered squeeze bore rifles in an early attempt at extracting maximum velocities out of their rifles? Probably OT, or may be not, if this is one of those . . .

Are the bullets .284 or .287 like the Ross? Harold

Article not so long ago on the round and the rifle in Handloader or Rifle - either/or. It was noted the .280 Halger is nothing less nor more than a .280 Ross round.

139 grain bullet @ 3510 Ft/sec!!!. THat thing must have been pumped with fastburning riflepowder to really achieve such performance. I do suspect the pressure issue is way above of what I would load it for. My .270Wea has pushed a 140grain bullet to 3380 Ft/Sec but to add an additional 130 Feet would destroy brass and wear down the rifle.
