woodleigh hydrostatically stablised 30 cal solids
      #192359 - 23/10/11 08:38 AM

I have used these projectiles in 50 cal (570gn) with great success but now plan to use them in 30 06 (180gn)
Any experience out there with them?

Personal? 358 Norma Mag of of mine, one shot kills.

Having 308 Norma mag loads getting done, hopefully to use them before the end of sambar season.

Quite a few other blokes have used them on deer and are happy.

I have used them in my 404j on Cape Buffalo and Hyena,375 H&H on pigs and Scrub bulls.9.3x62 on Scrub Bulls and pigs,338 win mag on Scrub Bulls and pigs and now have some 170 grain Hydro's for my 8x68s to try.

Just reduce your standard load a little and work back up.
All my rifles run the same load for "normal" projectiles as the Hydro's of the same weight.

Have not used any in 30 cal though.

Cheers Neale.

Have loaded and shot a few at a target out of the .300H&H, and am planning to try them in a .300WM.

Hey Ben, what load did you use in the 300 H&H for the hydros?

Did it shoot them well?

G'day Craig,

I used the same as for PPSN: 70 grains of 2213SC; and an overall length of 3.445", because of a short throat. I haven't shot too many of them, but they hit the target fine.

Cheers,

What do you fellows shoot with these bullets? How well do they work in calibers under .375?

I haven't shot anything yet. My intention is to try them on a buffalo someday.

I think they would work fine in lower cals, probably act just like they do in bigger calibres - ie like a SOLID for penetration but soft for damage.

Like Ben, I would love to shoot a Buffalo with one (in 30 cal), not so much a head shot as a brain shot doesn't really
test the bullet but a heart / shoulder joint shot where bullet placement is vital.

Yes, a body shot would be nice to test. I am not a believer in body shots with smaller calibres, even though it can work. This projectile might just make the smaller calibres perform adequately on body shots.

I generally Agree re body shots on buff with smaller calibres,
but having used the 318WR on Buff before (many body shots) I'd like to do a comparison.

Smaller calibres perform adequately on body shots IF the right bullet is used AND THEY ARE HIT IN THE RIGHT PLACE - no room for error with bullet placement.

Not much damage on this Bush Buck with a 9.3mm Hydro and although the shot was a little too low a soft would have performed better. the problem was the place was full of Elephant and was super thick riverine bush so although I felt quite "under gunned" I'd be best with a solid like the Hydro.
