Howard Hill Longbows Tearing-up the Paper Javelina in the NT
      #192323 - 22/10/11 08:40 PM

I thought I'd share some photos from my practice this arvo...

You can shoot these 70" longbows sitting-down.

These photos shows the results from the 60# string-follow Redman on a new Javie target.

Then the 75# Wesley Special came-out to play. As usual, Gabby supervised.

These are my two Howard Hill longbows (at present; another is being made), custom-made by Craig Ekin of Howard Hill Archery in Hamilton, Montana.

The Redman is made of yew with a cocobolo riser; the Wesley Special is made of bamboo with a bocote riser. The arrows are Douglas fir. The arrows and strings are home-made.

Cheers!

By-the-way, I hardly-ever use field points (the pointy ones for target practice); I use steel blunts, which rapidly arrest in the grass and dirt to avoid burrowing and loss. I always carry a couple when hunting, so that I can keep my eye in on a leaf, or a tuft of grass, a sandy creek bed or a termite mound.

I am pleased to say that in addition to young academics, there are a quite a few up-and-coming young archers, riflemen and hunters as a result of Monday-through-to-Friday!

Way to go Ben - I have a 74# Tembo HH I haven't shot for years.

I bought it at a North American Long bow Safari - back in the 80's.

Lots of fun, but now, find myself shooting self-bows more nowadays.

Keep your hand in - it's necessary.

G'day Daryl,

Selfbows! The ultimate accomplishment and challenge! Do you have some photos of them? Are you on TradGang, per chance?

Cheers,

Ben

Ben:
Great to see your post hear today, your a bit younger than I thought. The new book has gone to the printer, should be in my hands by the 10th of November.
Daryl:
We have probably met at the Safari, the only one I missed was #3 up to about #15 then it was hit or miss for me. Its amazing how we have like interests. By the way I'm always looking for pre-1965 Howard Hill items for my collection.

G'day Bob,

Just to cause confusion, there are two Aussie Bens who are into HH longbows: Myself, and Ben Maher from Victoria (Northern Ben and Southern Ben). But I have spoken to you on the phone years ago, when I first decided to use timber arrows but had no idea how to make them myself. It is interesting how there are a few of us who like HH longbows and nice rifles. How do I go about purchasing a book from you?

Cheers,

Ben

G'day Ben:
Yes I was thinking of Ben Maher. My book is on collecting Howard Hill Memorabilia. It shows the reader how to date various items and decide who the bowyer was that made the bow. has over 300 color pictures of Hill merchandise Bows, arrows, quivers, broadheads plus other items. Items are from my collection and other collectors around the US. They are $50 plus shipping, have to check on what that will be too you.

Small world Bob. Yes - probably met or saw you at one or more.

It was my wife who placed 5th top shooter out of 520 at the Souke B.C. Safari (bearing 515 shooters). She beat me by 74 points and my brother (exceptional day for me), who is BC's champion longbow bow/hunter class champ for many years by well over 100 points. The next Safari was at Golden BC & they's ceased scoring for placment. I don't remember which #'s they were.

We were told there were too many guys had their noses out of joint over being beaten by my wife. HA! I thought it was incredible and not the first time for me.

The modern-made Longbows are fun, but I have to be quite careful about a re-acurring tendenitis. My 74# Tembo and 81# Harvester gave me that affliction in both elbows - badly! Couldn't shoot for over 2 years.

Now, I find I can shoot the 65# Hickory D-section bow, a bit - 73" between knocks and very smooth. I'm going to tiller it down to about 52#, so I can shoot it more often.

I started making self bows back about 1987, if I had to guess at a date.

Daryl:
My wife and I are real close friends to Colby & Lil Robinson from Golden, we usually camp together, Colby was one of the founding fathers of the Safari. I've got a good friend getting ready for Cape Buffalo, would that 74# Tembo be for sale?
Bob
