Winchester 8mm Mauser or Mannlicher 236 grn soft points
      #192301 - 22/10/11 01:15 PM

You can't collect old rifles without getting into collecting vintage ammo to go along with them, so when I came across this box of Winchester (2 piece slip box)labeled 8mm Mauser or Mannlicher smokeless with 236 grain soft points dated 05/1914 I had to buy the box as I had never seen them before. I found it strange that Winchester sold these labeled that way as they are 2 different rounds with the 8mm Mannlicher being 8x56 & the 8mm Mauser being 8x57. I quess the line of thinking being that the 8x56 Mannlicher fired in a 8x57 chamber would just blow the shoulder .030 forward to the 8x57 chamber (not an uncommon practice for the handloader fireforming) but to be advertised as such? Has anybody ever seen a box of these or have any idea of rarety or collector price for these? The box is full with nice orange labels, cartridges have some tarnish where they rested against the box

Thanks for posting and yes, please show pix if you can.

Ken Waters noted a similar identification and nomenclature used with 9mm Mauser/Mannlicher. In his case, IIRC, he miked all the relevant dimensions and found they were sort of a "cross-breeding" of the two rounds.

I think it is in Pet Loads.

Very interesting, and really, a big blue nose 236 grain bullet would do just fine in the 8mm Mauser for a lot of game!

Fellas,
Just came out of the reloading room where I shot a couple of pic's of the cartridge compared along side of another 8x56 & an 8x57JRS (didn't notice the R until afterwards)along with pic's of the box & its labels. Now the problem, I haven't been able to post pic's here but I could email them to someone if they wanted to add them to this post. Just PM an email address and I will forward a couple of pictures.
Another interesting note: I just decided to measure the bullet dia. in the 1914 Winchester, .317 & the vintage DWM 8mm mannlicher measured .323. Also checked against Donnelly's cartridge conversion and the Mannlicher is a couple thousands smaller almost every where & looks like it would chamber fine except for shorter, sharper shoulder. In 1914 most of the Mausers would have had the "I" .318 bore at that time as well!

here it is

iirc the right bullet diameter for the 8x56 MS is .326 so a .317 dia bullet is more for the 8x57I.
after WW 2 Remington was made a 6,5x52 carcano for the greek civil war that was also such an crossover and work in the 6,5x54 greek military mannlicher schönauer to.

Lancaster,
The IWK 8mm Mannlicher bullet on the right measures .323 (Starret micrometer). I have several other manufacturer brands at home that I will measure as well but suspect they will measure .323. Sure enough all bullets measured .323 dia. including a box of Mannlicher 8mm for the 1908 rifle manufactured in Austria also measured .323.

Thanks for adding the pic's for me
