Need to finish a model 70 custom - any suggestions?
      #156517 - 15/03/10 10:54 AM

A couple years ago, I inherited a Winchester custom project and think it is time to get back on it.
It is a tribute to my great uncle which my brother started and upon his untimely death became mine to complete.
It is a pre 64 model 70 in .280 Rem mag. and the intention all along is for it to be designed as a scoped mountain rifle. I plan on following this through.
It was engraved by Ralph Bone - in fact it is most likely the last gun he did. The scope mounts are Talley and I'm pretty sure he did the bottom metal as well.
My thought is to have Chuck Grace finish it in a classic American style - I am sure he would do a great job - but thought I would throw it out there and see if any of the good folks here have any other suggestions.

Huvius

I am not learned enough to offer advice, but I do hope you keep us informed of the progress. Looks like the makings of a fine rifle, worthy of those it's dedicated to.

Cheers

Adam

I think barrel profile and length will be needed in order to make an intelligent recommendation. The action looks fantastic.

Looks great. With Ralph Bone engraving how about another American great to stock it - Jerry Fisher.

Please post photos as it progresses.

The barrel is 23 1/4" long and has pretty much a light sporter contour - I could take more measurements but I think I will post some more pictures tomorrow.
Gary Gowdy has been suggested - does anyone here have some good info on his work?

Check http://www.gundigest.com/article/ResearchSample_Engraved2008/ for examples of Gary Goudy's work. I have a friend who has had several rifles stocked by him and thinks highly of his skill.

Do you plan to use this rifle, or just look at it? Don't mean to sound sarcastic, but the true nature of any good rifle is to shoot. But, there are those amongst us that would prefer just to look at and show off a beautiful rifle - so the question stands, do you want to shoot this rifle?

Coming along absolutely beautifully. What finish will you have on the action? Case coloring? Yes, please post pictures as the work progresses. This is going to be another amazing rifle whose pictures to enjoy!
