Hi Neale,

That was a very good buy to say the least. They do get some bargains but a lot is over priced. Cheryl is a dream to deal with and is always very helpful.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

Plan 1.Fit cross bolts and use it.

Plan 2.Rechamber to 450 AI or 458 Lott after plan 1.

Plan 3.Fit cross bolts, shorten barrel, fit barrel band sling swivel, fit new recoil pad and slim down timber.

Plan 4. Turn into a 500 Jeffery and cut loose !

I will use it for awhile as I have never even fired a 458 I dont think.

My freind has one,it's the "fastest" .458 we've ever shot and chrongraphed..?? then he cut the barrel to 21" and it was still fast? I have tried to buy it,trade for it and even bribed his wife..

I don't understand why the .458 would be restricted to 3 rounds in the magazine, while the same gun in .358 Norma (& 375H&H after I rebarreled it) held 5 rounds in the magazine, + one up the spout = 6 shots.

Is there a block in the bottom of the magazine box?

I think the auction house made a mistake.

Should hold at least 5 + 1.

Look forward to having a play with it.

Yes, should be a 5 round mag but will probably hold 6 anyway.

The Brnos had a better quality of timber/bedding than the later CZs and probably won't need the cross bolts, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to add them. Hopefully it doesn't have the jamming issues (for those rounds that come out of the LHS of the magazine) - I believe that even in the Brno days you'd have a 50/50 chance of getting one that didn't jam (in 458 only).

You probably also have the flip-up peep in the rear of the action.

You'll probably also want to change the recoil pad - those hard rubber ones don't compare to the modern versions.

I had one of those in 375H&H many years ago and it shot MOA consistantly straight out of the box, but I guess this is not a requirement for a 458 which is not intended for any long range hunting.

Well done on the price. When I was looking around to buy my 458 (I wanted a Brno) they were few and far between and didn't stay on the market for long. This was about a year ago and prices ranged from $900-$1,200 bare rifle. I saw one at $900 but it was non-standard and a bit worn (cosmetically) here and there. A second-hand CZ came up at that time and I got that instead.

Why did I ever sell this one?

That is a great piece of timber.

Great deal Neale... I'd definitely be putting at least one cross bolt in it, as Brno timber is fairly soft.

My recently acquired ZKK600 in 9.3x62mm hasn't got one and I've noticed a hairline crack across the area behind the bedding block

Interesting that it had the single set trigger fitted instead of the standard trigger...

TillyMan.
You got yourself a "project" by the sound of it.
Can you fix it with a cross bolt and bedding ?.

NitroX.
I did buy a Zastava in 9.3 for $535 so it does look cheap.

Now for some load data.

Internal 'mend' on Tillyman's rifle can be easily accomplished at home or by a gun smith. Cracks are unfortunate, but happen if eveything isn't right including wood structure. I once had to solder on a 'lump' to prevent a particularly nice chunk of Claro from splitting every 300 or 400rounds. It always split in a new spot- ever on a repaired crack (thin accraglass) - 3rd time it split, I fixed it permanently with lug and cross bolts & it went over 10,000 rounds after that without breaking again.

Yeah, in more ways than one... the checkering needs to be recut too
I also discovered when removing the old poorly fitted recoil pad that some clown has drilled two 5/8" lightening holes into the butt... no wonder it had a little too much forward balance, I put it down to the 24" barrel.

I've got a few of the Talley cross bolts which will fit fine, the rifle has been bedded (incorrectly) then tweaked some previous owner to remove bedding material from the front, sides and bottom where it was bearing on the action recoil lug.

While that was the right thing to do to correct the bedding and leave only the rear of the action recoil lug and the forward glass bed surface in contact, it seems to have created a 'stress riser' and cracked from one corner where the bedding was removed across the stock reinforce.

If I dig out all the old bedding, lever the crack apart and use high strength marine grade wood glue slid in via a cheap feeler gauge, then screw in the new cross bolt it should all tie together OK.

Then rebed the whole lot correctly using Devcon

I'm sure you will sort it.

So are two cross bolts the norm or one ok ?.

Hello Neale,

congratulation for your rifle!
I would strongly recommend to change the Brno safety to a 3-position safety type Win 70.

My rifle has feeding problems with all sort of bullets which are not round-nose shaped.
(magnum length action and the short .458 Win. round do not work together very good)
Steve Zihn recommended to break all sharp edges of the chamber, maybe that helps.

best regards
Rolf

The "Lott" or the "450 AI" might help.

About the safety.
I am left handed so the standard safety is under my left thumb.
If you think of it like a "hammer" as in pull back to cock,it works well for me.

I now own 5 Brno's so I am used to the safety's good bad or indifferent.

Hope mine feeds !

Seems the convention is for one cross bolt up to 9.3x62mm chambering in the ZKK600 and two for anything chambered in the ZKK602.

Brno ZKK wood was often very soft and split easily... there was apparently a fire in the Brno company wood store in the late 70's, which may have been a blessing in disguise as most of the old poor timber stocks literally went up in smoke! Which would explain the sudden increase in quality as they had to source new supplies.

Early Brno stocks also don't take checkering very well unless you flood the area with two-pack marine grade wood sealer after stripping the old factory finish. Once it soaks into the raw checkered timber and goes off rock hard, it enables the new checkering to be cut crisply instead of just tearing the grain.

Anyway this is getting OT from your original post, I'll start a new thread on the restoration of my 9.3x62mm... the orginal gunsmithing was well done but the rifle has obviously passed through several uncaring hands before mine

G'Day Fella's,

Neal, well done on a cheap purchase!

FYI, I was reading a thread on the .458 Accrel!
It is a cartridge based on a 2 1/2" long (std long action), Rem Ultra Mag Case and it develops .458 Lott ballistics!!!
If required, Email me and I send you this particular link.

Hope that helps,

Doh!
