DWM M1900 American Eagle Luger
      #101004 - 31/03/08 10:13 PM

Just got back from the auction over the weekend. Put another toy in the toy box. A DWM Model 1900 American Eagle Luger. This one is definitely collector grade:

I have always wanted a nice American Eagle, so I'm pretty well pleased with this one.

Yes, very tidy specimen, Curl. Congratulations.
Don't see them very often over here.
In fact, I've never seen one in the flesh.

Keep your eye out for one of those missing half-dozen .45 ACP Lugers trialled in 1907. That would be really something!

Very nice. I've seen only one in person in the past forty years. Congrats.

On the other hand..............

I've heard that an original 45 acp Luger from 1907 could possibly go as high as $1,000,000 (US).

So good luck.

Thanks, guys. These two photos don't really do the pistol justice. When I get back into "photography mode" I plan to snap some better shots of it, and I'll post them here.

I used to be a very small-time Luger collector, beginning when I was in highschool and continuing until I sold them all to help finance my double rifle addiction. The sell-off was over 20 years ago. Since then I have developed a slight itch to get back into some Lugers.

The M1900 American Eagle is one I always had lust for. In fact, this is the first M1900 I have owned at all. Finding an American Eagle in this fine condition set my juices flowing, so I just had to pounce.

I plan to add a few more varieties now that I have this one. I'll just sit back and wait for opportunity.

I see I promised in April 2008 to follow-up with detailed photos of this nice Luger. Here I am over three years later making good on my promise. All photos were taken this afternoon. Please forgive the delay. This exquisite pistol is worth the wait.

Enjoy,

Rod,

Thanks. I know you are somewhat of a fan of the 7.65mm Luger round. This is a very early one.

We all like big. Can I interest you in a couple of full-resolution (4288 x 2848) shots? Links below.

Nice Luger.

Thanks for the compliment. My setup is nothing special. My wife allows me one little corner of the basement:

Until this year I have relied on natural light. I would position my work in the morning at a west facing window to get natural, indirect light. That's really difficult as conditions change constantly. The umbrellas give constant light, but they present their own challenges too. I'm always striving for better conditions and better product.

Nice setup.

Do you use a macro or standard lens?

I shot all these photos with a standard lens: the AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm ED mounted on my D90. It's a truly remarkable lens with brilliant optics. I trip the shutter with Nikon's little "remote control" I shoot with the camera set on "P" and adjust to f16 with a shutter speed of about 1/6 to 1/8.

You have to stop your lens down to get sufficient depth of field. Shutter speed be damned. Use a good solid tripod and trip with the little remote. With your long shutter the vibration caused by the mirror slap is minimized also. I've shot photos using natural light with shutter speeds as slow as 1/4 to 1/3.

The camera is programmed to set the shot at about f5.6 and 1/60. That results in muddy looking shots with no definition. Stop it down and slow it down.

Another point. The lens lets me shoot from about 4 feet. That reduces barrel distortion. The closer you get, the wider the angle and the more barrel you get in your photo. The image curves away from the viewer on either side and on top and bottom. A lot of my shots are with the lens fully extended.

Sharp looking American Eagle there Cap'n, and what great condition !
I have seen two at antique auctions, both where in way poorer condition and brought much higher bidding then one would expect, especially at a "non gun crowd"

Wise buy,and sure to be a strong investment (beats the S&P)

Thanks for posting your American Eagle Luger. Beautiful example of gun crafting. Here in louisiana all you ever see is the usual high priced junk. Shot out bores and mismatched parts. Was looking through Guns & Ammo 1964 issue and with the exception of one luger at $150 all the rest were under $100. Ah for the good old days. Course in 1964 I had just enlisted in the Navy and since living in New York assembling a luger collection would have been impossible. Think I was making $1.95 an hour shoveling coal. Thanks again, Frank
