Amazing expansion yet good length of shank still there.

Amazing weight retention for such wide expansion.

Daryl.
I couldn't put a photo of the pig up as it was a mess.

This will be my bullet of choice for Aussie animals. I put it on the bench last weekend with this load and put 3 shots into an 1.5" group @ 207 yards.

This caliber is hard on bullets.
This is an RWS H-Mantle recovered from a pig.

Great thread.

Really superb performance of that PP.

What great shooting opportunities, and what a rifle! Beautiful, and a great caliber. Interesting you and Nitro are getting into them. Thanks for posting.

Keith found the H-mantle's to be a bit soft in his 8x68S when used on moose and elk. He did like the 225gr, I think they were, Hornady's and the heavier 185 to 195gr. Norma yellow plastic tipped bullets. That was a good moose bullet from the 8x68.

Incredibly, the fairly light 187gr. Remington's I think, seemed to hold up well - IIRC.

The factory 187gr. cone points were soft as well, seems to me.

Must depends on impact speed. Really close shots are tough on bullets from any high speed calibre.

I have wanted an 8x68 since reading a lot of reloading books about 14 years ago but all seemed too hard at the time.I then found out "you can build what you want",it only takes money.
Thought bullet weight and speed to powder ratio looked good.

Interesting that the Remington Core lokts 185 grain are OK. I saw some in the gun shop the other day for $55 a 100.

The 187 grain H-mantles kill really well on side on shots but angle shots or departing ones leave a little to be desired.

I only have about 60 H-mantles left then will move onto some 250 grain Woodleigh RN I have and then I will get to the 224 grain Cone Points.

404 I was using 8x68S for some time before I got infected by 9,3's. I was using ABC bullets (X-type) and those worked great. As you have found out this caliber is a bullet breaker "par excellence". Among others I have used factory loaded 224 Cone Points. While extremely accurate there were some spectacular failures:

- roe doe (15kg) shot broadside, entry behind the shoulder exit on the front of the throat...
- red stag shot steep downward, entry high on the shoulder, exit should be very low on the opposite shoulder but was just under the spine on the mid ribs...

Cone Ponts were much better from beginning - Nickel plated steel jacket, modern ones are copper jacketed and far too soft IMO.

In 8x68s speed frame I'd pick 200gr A-frame - tho pricey it might just be the ticket, not to mention Woodleigh's Hydro - now that is the kind of bullet concept that would be just plain perfect for 3000fps with IMO spectacular results - sadly as far as I know those are not available in .323?

I have some 200 grain A-Frames as I said but will save them.

Woodleigh now make a 170 grain .323" Hydro so I will try some of them at 3100 or 3200 fps.

When I have finnished playing I think the 220 grain PP at 2800 fps will do me fine for 99% of my shooting.

93mouse - your previous expereince with the 8x68S is a wonderful thing to share - thanks for posting it. I-too was wondering about the heavier cone point.

I know Keith was not impressed with the lighter factory ammo in cone points, nor with the H-Mantle factory stuff. He was shooting elk, mooose, mountain goats and big horn sheep, but those bullets did not penetrate well and were very 'soft' acting. He never lost an animal he shot with them, but did not appreciate not being able to trust them for a single shot kill.

Many people don't care how the bullet acted, as long as it does the job in killing the animal. I prefer to have a properly expanding/penetrating bullet kill the animal, one that can be trusted from any angle - Elmer's 'raking shots' seem to happen often.

From what I've seen, bullets like the Noslers, TSX's, Hydro's, TUG's & Swifts work litterally every time. That's what I want in a bullet. Unfortunately here, the Hydro's might not be legal for shooting game. The TSX's are legal due to their hollow point, expanding nature. The Hydro's would be classified as a full metal jacket 'solid', just like a FMJ "X" bullet or mil-spec bullet would be classified. It is illegal in BC to shoot a big game animal with a 'solid', non-expanding bullet.

Interesting Daryl.
Funny you can shoot an animal with a fast, light hollow point bullet from a smaller caliber and just wound it badly but cant use a reliable solid.

Yeah I expect the law was made to prevent people from using military FMJ, ie: 6.5's, 7mm's,.303, '06 and .308 at the time of the initial law being made. It was never changed nor revoked and stands the same now as when originally put on the books.
