9.3x62 Stutzen, Final-Final Version...
      #189200 - 04/09/11 02:39 PM

For those who are maybe recuperating from a broken leg, stuck in jail, or otherwise have lots of time on their hands and care to read the entire saga, here is the last link, complete with other links to the prior threads pertaining to this rifle.....

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....&PHPSESSID=

Anyway;

Here is the final product, and this time, after one barrel change and three subsequent barrel cuts, is the Stutzen, of sorts.

Well, I cut the barrel to 18", fitted the Ruger banded front sight, then didn't like it...

So I chopped it again to 16", split the band, slipped it on, and the gunsmith crowned the bbl, soldered the band on and reblued it.

That required the sight to be filed to zero. Sight blade is an NECG Sourdough. Sight base is a Ruger ramp for the .45-70 No.1, slight reshaped to make it look a little less "Ruger".

I brought my old gun vise to the range to make the filing process a bit simpler. All went well.

Then zeroing. First, shot at 20 meters to get the thing on the paper, then moved out to 70 meters for the iron sight zeroing.

With my univeral double sling adapter, the stubby 16" bbl will work out great for crawling thru brush and the like. This will come in handy for bear hunting.

The chronograph told an interesting story. My original goal was to have a short carbine with similar ballistics to my long barreled 9.3x57's. I thought about chopping a x57, but always choked because I felt the actual velocity of a 16 inch barrelled x57 would fall under 2000. As it turns out, the chorono'd velocity of the 9.3x62 w/ 285 grain Prvi and RL15 w/ reformed .30-06 cases is 2065, exactly the factory velocity of the 9.3x57 Norma loads in the rifle, and w/ Prvi brass, 2095, a bit faster yet; perfect.

Lastly, I fired one shot in the jugs and boards and it did as thought; full penetration 4 Boards, 3 Jugs, found expanded well in 4th jug.

Here's the bullet. Not quite so dramatic expansion as ocurs at the higher x62 speeds of 2200+, but from my experience with the same bullet at the same velocity in my M46 HVA x57, quite good enough for dependable opening even on small bear.

As an aside, chrono'ing Prvi factory 9.3x62 with the same bullet shwed a very slow muzzle speed of 2050-2075, just like my RL15 x62 load with the 16" barrel, or common factory-duplicate 9.3x57 loads.

Thanks. This one is a definite keeper. I liked the way it shot and handled in the past, but now is quite a unique, practical and handy setup for bear hunting and for thick brush and timber deer hunting during those sloppy November snowstorms.

lancaster, a red dot would serve well on this rifle for some applications, and certainly would be easy to mount, as well as having a scope ready, due to the excellent CZ receiver dovetail system.

But for me, a red dot would not be too useful except possibly for bear. I do not shoot driven or running game for the most part, but rather, carry such arifle for very thick cover where a scope is very helpful. In fact about the best scope I can think of for this rifle would be a 2-10 variable. Oftimes I find the need to thread the needle thru brush and the higher powers of magnification come in useful. Scope at present is a 1 3/4 - 5 variable, and it is OK.

The rifle handles very well indeed, tho, and for shooting running or moving game the red dot would no doubt be a good addition.

Ach, jetzt Ich verstehe.

I have no experience with illuminated reticle scopes but they sound very interesting and some certainly like them a lot. I just might have to take a close look at one!

Say what?????

Actually, it really isn't bad. I thought the whole muzzle blast thing might be a downer, but as I cut the thing back it never materialized. I sense less blast and noise than my .375 and way less than some others like the .300 Ultra even when they are sporting long barrels.

I have a 20" .308 and a 17" 6.5x55, and this 9.3 doesn't sound much off them.

Unless I'm just deafer than I thought!

Sounds good- I was concerned about the '06IMP case of powder and the short barrel, too. All's well that ends well.

Good shooting. I like the front and rear sights.

That is an amazing bullet. I should send you some 286gr. plastic tipped Norma's unless you've already tested them?

Thanks Daryl.

No, I've never tested the 286 Norma's. Only the lighter weight ones. I'm curious, too.

That is handy looking carbine you have there. Caliber is also one of the best allrounder ever made. My moose carbine is from quite a same mold. Sako battue 9,3x62 with 1,5-5 variable optic.
I have tried those PRVI or PPU bullets and they worked good enough for small mooses but i want that my bullets work in all situations when range is between 5 to 200 metres (accurate, enough penetration and good mushrooming) and i found Woodleighs 286gr RN SN best for my purposes. Norma oryx are also a very good bullet.

Paati - have you tried the 286gr. Norma yellow plastic tipped bullets?

Probably- the ones with the yellow plastic tips - worked well on moose @ 200yards in 196gr. weight from an 8x68S.

I was wondering if they'd be a bit too stiff jacketed for the 9.3x57. I think the Norma factory ammo used the round nosed lead tipped 286gr.

9.3 that is a nice looking rifle. I would think it would be a delight to carry and a very handy calibre for hunting.
