This question seems to come up on most of the Muzzleloading forums and a few other gun forums pretty regularly. Usually it is being asked by a first time builder but sometimes just a guy who has never taken his lock apart. So I put together a short video on how I disassemble a lock and the proper tools required.

It's only semi-related to the 2 Bore build but the Lock I took apart is one of them that will be remodeled for this project.

I hope this helps.

I haven't weighed it since I inlet the buttstock, but probably close to 40 pounds. I know after picking it up a couple hundred times a day it really starts to get heavy. I would have preferred to turn the barrels to a very light profile(shave a couple pounds off of each barrel) but the customer specified the profile so it's going to be a very heavy rifle. The silver lining is that with as much as this thing is going to weigh it should mitigate the recoil a lot.

At 40 lb you certainly wouldn't want to have carried to for 5-6 hours then sudenly have to get it into action for multiple shots. Can see the need for a gun bearer either with wheels or legs to take some of the muscle lagg out of the equation.

On another point, with your inletting advise, I can see my time to do so ( in my ameturish fashion) becoming more carefully and PAITENTLY used. Thanks for that.

Coplin- those tubes appear to be about 24, maybe 25"? Was there a reason not to go shorter, like 22"? They do seem long to me, for such a thumper.

Daryl,

They are 30" long and only have a very slight taper...this was all done to the customers specifications. When we first discussed this build I tried to talk him into a shorter barrel length and a much more pronounced taper. I could have shaved several pounds off of each barrel...but when the man with the money is very specific about what he wants, I give my opinion and then leave it up to him to decide what is best.

Unless it's a safety issue or in rare cases when what the customer wants would "look so bad" as to reflect on my reputation as a builder, I leave the rest up to "the customer is always right". I always turn down jobs that are unsafe(no exception there) and I try to stay away from projects that would be bad for future business.

Certainly is coming together Colin....!!! Great balls of fire man,....Who, I repeat WHO, is going to be able to carry this thing?? I wouldn't want to carry 45 lbs of ANYTHING out to the end of my driveway, about 1500 feet, much less attempt to shoulder and fire it....AND it's going to end up a little muzzle heavy too!!! Sounds more like a punt gun!!

Anyway, I have followed this from the beginning and admit to a great interest in the project! I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind??

How did you arrive at your basic stock dimensions? I realize the customer had his input and the stock has to conform to the metal of the action etc....I am not talking about length of pull or cast, more so the amount of drop at heel, the buttplate angle, etc...I know something about stockmaking, but very little about double rifles and even less about shoulder cannons like this. Is the intent to cause the gun to rise dramatically while in recoil?? Of course with all that weight up front who knows what will happen?!?!

You know,..Just asking....

As an interesting aside, I thought I would do a quick test a few minutes ago. Since most of the weight will be "between the hands" or as much so as Colin can make it, I tried to keep it as real as possible......

I started with an eight pound, 30 in. barreled 10 bore shotgun (actually weighs a little more than that), then had my son drape a 25 lb. bag of shot over the gun directly over my hand on the forend. Then added ten lbs more in two small bags placed so the balance point was just at my front hand. Total weight 43 pounds (give or take). I don't know about you guys, but I am not man enough to handle it! I gave up any pretense of being able to shoulder it and hold it for more than a few seconds and if the weight was even heavier, as Colin says it will be, and further forward.......I am afraid that buff or ele would just have to have a go at me!!

You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!!

I would think that 30 pounds is a LOT to shoulder, swing and fire at a game animal. I cannot imagine doing that with 45 pounds. Maybe I'm just getting too old and of too restricted an imagination. 45, eh, well, good-on-ya.

Like I said if it had been my decisions to make I would have reduced the weight in this thing a lot, but it's someone else's money.

Drop at comb, drop at heel, cast-off, pitch at toe are all measurements taken from the user and worked through in a set of formulas, then the smaller tweaks are done by experience. If you dig beck through the videos, I explained how the measurements are arrived at.

Been a busy week/weekend, but at least I got a video posted:
