I have the latest Merkel catalog here in Australia and they are not listed..

G'Day Fella's,

As a firearms dealer here in Oz, I just went and looked at the www.herrons.com.au (the Australia's Merkel Agent), web site.
They have a full listing of Merkel RX Helix rifle, in .223 to 9.3 x 62 in bore diameter.
The RX Helix kind of reminds me of the exceedingly popular and successful, Sauer 200 series of rifles!

dr deer, I find it hard to believe that you have much credible engineering knowledge of anything, let alone firearms! Not to mention, actual experience with such things!!!
Best you stick to what you know best and anyone that has had any exposure to you will know what I mean by that.

I never said that it was a 'Herrons' catalog, it was provided to me by another Merkel agent and I guess that it was a German catalog in English.

Chapuisarmes, I was unaware of a second Merkel agency in Australia.

Homer, a dealers licence isn't dependent upon an engineering background either!
Do you have "actual experience" with either the Merkel Helix or Browning Acera?
The barrel attachment to the receiver may be similar to the Sauer (in fact it's closer to a Sauer than to their own KR1) but the elephant in the room is the straight pull action.
Do you have "actual experience" with modern straight pulls?

I was given a guys name that sells Merkel and he kindly sent me a catalog which has the KR1 but not the RX in it.

I had a Chapuis Challenger and found it Ok but prefer the normal CZ550 actions.

Thanks Jeff, I'm led to believe there was some manoeuvring by various dealers after Garnett Featherstone passed away but thought Herrons had 'sealed the deal' so to speak.
The Helix release may have been after this process.

dr deer, going back to your original statement, Herron's have them listed and priced. So your wrong there.
And Yes, I do have a reasonable amount of experience both servicing and repairing straight pull rifles. From the Swiss K31 Schmidt Ruben to the Blaser R8. I imagine this is more than you can say.

It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it! For your information I've used two modern straight pulls for the majority of my hunting and shooting for over a decade. The bolt handles of both of these rifles travels through an arc unlocking the bolt head before being pulled straight back. From what I've seen the Helix bolt handle lacks this pivoting movement and the leverage it provides.
Have you shot one and found otherwise?

dr deer, please do tell us all, what make and model your straight pull rifles are?

As to actually speaking with you to get up to speed on you and your thinking, sorry but this Good Old Boy, already knows more than enough!

And if you believe you and your thinking is a threat to the Status Quo. Can I say, someone, please tell him he's dreaming!!!

Also, I would like to say that my imagination has served me very well. Let me know if you would like more details on this?

I spoke with Merkel USA - they're trying to get some in for the SCI show. I pushed for a MSRP, and was quoted around $5K for a gun that's a step or two above the basic gun. Personally, I think I'll stay with my R93.

As I asked recently dr deer er Col, how about you just tell us what the Brand and Model of your "Straight Pull" rifles are?

Well you're the one with the vast gunsmithing experience, surely you can better describe the bolt handle/knob movement relative to the bolt head during the initial stage of opening the action of the above two rifles and any mechanical advantages this provides compared to the handle travel of the M95.

Not sure about the M95/M96 though, could you Please Explain?

Sorry dr deer er Col, I don't think I have ever suggested that I am a Gunsmith!
FYI, in 1979 I completed my 4 year indentured apprenticeship, as a Mechanical Fitter and Machinist/General Engineer!
I have been employed working with in my trade, or utilising these skills ever since!
I was employed at a local gun shop (SWW) for almost 4 years specifically to work on, repair and modify both new and used customers firearms and also, this gun shops firearms.
Even during this time, I never described myself as anything, other than a Mech Fitter & Machinist!

So dr deer er Col I hope you will agree, that with over 37 years of continuous mechanical trade experience, I might be reasonably well qualified to pass judgment on some firearm related issues?

For the benefit of those that live outside Australia, there is no formal trade training in this country, for gunsmiths (military armorers yes but not gunsmiths)! The vast majority of gunsmiths in Australia, are either Mech Fitter & Machinists now working on firearms or Gunsmiths that have received formal training, somewhere overseas.

dr deer er Col, I hope that addresses this inquiry?

homer, have you looked at the threads I have started since first posting in this thread?

For an understanding of my comment "The bolt handles of both of these rifles travels through an arc unlocking the bolt head before being pulled straight back" this might help.


(unfortunately I dont have a copy of todays newspaper to hold whilst demonstrating with my own rifles for you )

You might also like to note that the bolt handle/knob of the Heym SR30 also appears to travel through an arc to unlock the bolt, however the pivot point has been shifted 90 degrees relative to the Blaser and Mauser enabling them to market the rifle thus:

Geezuz that looks like Greek print to me or is it Russian..no idea.

Anyway I would be happy to take the bark off one in a decent calibre around the hills.Paint all that shiny stuff first though!
