Do they taste better when in velvet?

One might just think that its another pen deer that was taken in velvet with the purpose of not waiting till it rubbed out, negating possible breakage of antlers in doing so.

WOW.

So according to the text below the photo, POSSIBLY 2 NEW WR sized deer "295 inches and 287 inches (green score)" unless of course they are one and the same.

Gryph
Do they "farm" mule deer in the US ?

Is that what you mean by Pen or is "penning" where they just fence an area and coral the deer so they can't move away like in South Australia ? (although as we know, not that it stops all the deer from getting out).

.

they do pen raise deer in the US..however this was shot in Canada..where they also pen raise elk..n ,not sure if this is the case or not--if it is it will not be recognized by P&Y ..

mostly in the western US..The majority of hunting is not penned --free range animals..

Don't worry Gryph, I figured it out but thought I would ask.

A mate has some deer "penned" in NZ and had a Fallow Buck that grew great antlers. About a year before he was going to shoot it it died with some others. So yes, I figure people keep them just to get a big set of antlers.

And of course I know what goes on in SA !!! (Not the ADA, the other side of the fence).

At least with Sambar ..................

and talking of big deer, I see that we might have a new Australian No 1 Sambar as well when it dries out. Will be interesting to see what it ends up.

Another big mule killed in Colorado..and no, not on a farm ..good news..

Ripp

Professional free skier Drew Rouse tagged this 200-class velvet mule deer in late August near his home in Eagle County, Colorado. Rouse shared with Field & Stream the details of his remarkable hunt, which capped both a 7-year odyssey to kill a big muley and his recovery from a serious skiing accident that could easily have ended the 32-year-old’s life.
